I'm leaving the end of June for my first hunt in South Africa. The 7 targeted animals are:

Impala
Kudu
Warthog
Red Hartebeest
Gemsbuck
Blesbuck
Blue Wildebeest

I am considering my 300 Wby Mag with 180 Barnes X or my 375 H&H with Nosler 260 accubonds.
The only reason I am considering the 375 H&H is I've never used it on a hunt yet.
I shoot them both well.

Any thoughts or advise.

Thanks,
Joe

Joe,

Your 300 will do the job but there is no reason to not use the 375. The 270 TSX or 260 Accubonds would be great choices for the 375.

Your .300 Wby would be perfect for that list.

I have both as well, and this year I am going to Namibia in June too. I will be taking the 300 Weatherby due to the possible distances in the Kalahari Desert for gemsbok. South Africa is a lot like Namibia so I would probably take the 300 Roy.

If you are ever going to a place like Zambia or Zimbabwe then I would take the 375. Distances are a lot closer and the bush country is thick.

You are allowed two guns as far as I know in South Africa. Take both!

The 375 screams classic africa. If you can handle distances to 250 yards with the 375 - take it.

Taken them all except gemsbok with the 300 Weatherby and 180 Partitions. You don't need a 375 for that list. Today I'd switch to the TSX and never look back. Although the 375 has a 35 year start on the 300 Weatherby, I can tell you the Weatherby's just as home in AFrica as the 375 for the animals listed. jorge

I've shot all those except Hartebeeste with 180 grain Partitions in .300 Wby. One shot. One dead animal. If you stick one through both lungs, it's dead animal. I would take whichever one you can shoot the best, probably the Wby. My PH told me shots would not be farther than 75 or 100 yards. Three were beyond 200.

Joe- I took a 375 and 300 Win on my SA safari, and I used both. The 300 will take all on your list, but if eland is a possibility, I'd feel a little more comfy with the 375. Plus, there's no better feeling than standing over your first head of game taken with your 375, Africa is where that gun belongs!

Best of Luck! BN

You are not going to shoot further than 150 yards in most places in RSA, so you don't need the Wby. The 375 is a little too much but better that than not enough.

I would take both, always have a back up. How can you not first reach for the 375H&H when in Africa? It screams AFRICA! I have a 300 rem ultra mag. It is staying home. Eyedoc and I are died in the wool bow hunters but when dangerous game is a possiblity, which is what is on the ticket this summer, His 300 win mag and my 300 are staying in the closet. His 375H&H and my 416 Rigby along with bows are making the flight. Bows for the plains game, the DG will get the lead.

Use enough gun! drwes

I used my 300 Weatherby in Zimbabwe for plains game and all one shot kills with the 180 grain Trophy Bonded bullets, perfect expansion on all I recovered.

Except for Impala & Warthog I took all those in 2006 with a 308.
A couple of times I wished for a 300 mag when it came to range.

I now have a 300 Wby MK5 for my next open plains hunt over there - I reckon it will be absolutely perfect with 180gn TSXs.

And of course your 375 would be excellent too although not quite as flat shooting as the 300Wby.

Good hunting with whichever rig you take!

Take both but keep the 375 close. You might have a good opportunity for eland, giraffe, etc. In other words, your list may change when you start hunting.

I would choose the 300 Wby over the 375 any day of the week. I would also take another similar calibered rifle. Everyone needs two rifles on safari.

My own choices would be the 300, and a 30-06, 280, 7mm Magnum, 25-06, 257 Wby, or even a 257 Roberts if you like it.

Most folks who take a plainsgame safari and use only a 375 end up regretting it.

While I was in Namibia in 2005 I shared a camp with a fellow Spaniard named Jose, and he had a run of bad luck with his only rifle a CZ 375, and didn't have a rifle to down grade to. The bad luck was a consistant scope eye he'd get about 50% of the time. He had no other rifle to step down to and had a big case of missitis caused by flinching behind that big CZ.

If things like Giraffe and Eland are available your 300 will be fine. If you have it a 338, 9.3 or 35 would be perfect as a pair.

Well, I'll disagree with Seth on this one. Wink I would definitely take a 375...if you can't handle it then that's another matter but you haven't said that. What has happened to someone else on safari has no direct correlation to you and what you can handle.

A 375 is perfect for eland...for giraffe, it's far from being too much gun.

Either one of them will work perfectly, the 300 WBY has a better trajectory and in RSA you can get some long shots...I see little need for the .375 if your not shooting dangerous game, although its a great caliber and I use it for elk, mostly because I just want to... beer

For the game listed, you only need a 7mm Rem mag. Worked for me, plus other animals as well with one shot kills out past 300 yards. You don't need a .375 for SA plains game, unless you're adding eland to the list, or giraffe, as has been mentioned.

I have used both of these fine calibers. With the Game mentioned I would bring the .300 Weatherby Magnum, along with 180 grain Nosler Partition bullet loaded in same.

It's just wrong to have a 375 H&H and not use it. It's perfect for plains game. Even little stuff.

Easy one.....take the .300....it's far more suited to the game you're hunting.

Boxer or brief,Ford or Chevy...both will do the job handily. However, I would take the 375H&H only because I like it better for two reasons. The first is for its classic status; second it will handle heavier bullets. Lou
