Question - In Namibia, the way I read it it is illegal to harvest a leopard after dark according to NAPHA. Is this correct or am I missing something? Kinda makes rethinking the long nights in the blind.............

I believe this is correct. However, PAC Leopards may be hunted after dark with artificial lights in Namibia.

Large numbers of Leopard not constantly harrassed by encounters with humans makes daylight hunting possible. This would be a totally unworkable restriction in South Africa, but can and does work to the benefit of all in Namibia.

I've never tried hunting Leopard in the daylight, but I would think that it would make for a pleasant change -- especially since I hunt exclusively with handguns. Unfortunately, Namibia won't let me hunt there nowadays. But, things change constantly in Africa, so my day may well arrive any time.

pinotguy is correct. On ranches with livestock you can hunt "Problem" animals with a light.

Thanks for the clarification. On problem leopards is the same one day permit granted like on a problem lion? Most of the leopards from Namibia I am aware of were taken after dark from a blind with bait. If this is correct wouldn't taking a leopard in this manner be a Lacey Act violation upon importation into the states? The cat was "illegally" harvested then imported clearly violates this statute unless I am reading it wrong. Looking at booking another leopard hunt but would rather avoid a possible felony charge.

I thought Leopard hunting was banned in Namibia in mid June?

They stopped issuing new permits for this season as the CITES quota had been reached, or at least that is my understanding.

You're quite correct -- any game taken illegaly under the laws of the host country would subject you to the Lacey Act when imported to the US. Several hunters have been caught up in the Lacey Act web when they took someone's word Re: legality in the host country -- a real mess!

Thanks for the input. I do have a friend in Namibia currently hunting leopard. Luckily his PH pulled the permits earlier in the year.
