Texas leads nation in sending safari hunters to Namibia

SAN ANTONIO — Texas sends more big-game safari hunters to the African republic of Namibia than any other state, Namibia's U.S. ambassador said Friday in San Antonio.

That makes Texas the focal point as Namibia seeks U.S. investments in its top industries of mining, fishing and tourism, Ambassador Martin Andjaba said between meetings with city and business leaders.

Andjaba returned to San Antonio on Thursday after an extended visit a year ago, when he hunted white-tailed deer at a Texas ranch.

He was scheduled to depart San Antonio on Friday night. Andjaba spoke Wednesday at the huge Dallas Safari Club's convention, which annually attracts about 20,000 hunters.

"I don't have the figures," Andjaba said, "but Texas sends more hunters than any other state. Most of the Texas hunters I have met have visited Namibia at one time or another. Some have been there more than once, more than twice."

That includes San Antonio lawyer and longtime hunter Bob Braubach, who helped schedule Andjaba's Texas meetings.

"Tourism is the fastest-growing sector in Namibia," he added. "Safari hunting is part of tourism, and it is helping us build bridges between Namibia and Texas and other states. We are looking for the possibilities of investors."

Namibia, a Southwest Africa nation with a population of more than 2.1 million is rich in mineral resources, including diamonds, gold, copper, uranium, marble and granite, the ambassador said.

Namibia also seeks to export fish, beef and grapes to the United States. Namibia exports fish to Europe, mainly to Spain. "We want to diversify to the U.S. market as well," Andjaba said.

I would suggest that Texas sends more hunters to every other African destination too? The majority of hunters I have met in camps in Africa have been from Texas.
