Im still dreaming to go to Africa one day but I have always been intrigued by the pursuit of the african game and the methods involved in it,I have always loved reading about lion hunts and I consider them the ultimate quarry but I have always had a doubt, I understand that lions are hunted by baiting in most of Africa and by tracking in areas with sandy soil but I have also heard of some cases where the males have been called in and I have always wondered why this method that at least for me sounds effective (And really exciting!) is not practiced more and in most areas where lion is hunted, I mean lions are territorial and fairly eager to fight other males and to have a lion calling each time closer would sure get the blood flowing. Hope you can solve my doubt!

I have tried it on one hunt (voice operated "roar tube"), without success, but I know of others who have done it successfully.

It is not openly practiced simply because in most countries it is forbidden for the same and obvious reasons that you have already indicated.

while on a pg hunt in zim I inquired with my ph if I could arrange a lion hunt and call in my my lion. to my dismay he said that was too easy and against the law. my passion is calling in game and I still have not hunted lion. I have hunted lion in CAR with French PH François Guillet and Christoph Morio, they used a plastic pipe and called into a bucket, it was extremely exiting sitting in the dark listening to this male calling back, it took us 2 days of calling to finally get him to commit but once he did he came in during the late afternoon and was shot at 40 m,Christoph also called in Buffalo by vocalising

In his opening post ManuelM was rather vague on the calling method to attract lions. Hunting laws which are against the calling of game or birds most always specify: "the use of electronic devices is prohibited" but if you are going to reproduce the sound of a lion using your own voice emitted through a cone as an amplifier, it should not be a problem but is nowhere near effective as a recorded tape.

Accurately put. FWIW, they have used electronic calls in places such as the KNP for many years and to great effect. Non electronic calling does sometimes work if done correctly........ if done less effectively it often only results in some entertaining activity in the local villages when they all start practicing their tree climbing skills.

I have no problem calling predators. My theory is this...even if calling is deemed "too easy", at least it brings in more animals thus making it possible to be selective in the animals one shoots. This reduces the temptation for client and PH to take immature game after spending a small fortune on a hunt. It also probably increases success rates thus making the setting of harvest quotas a bit easier and consistent. Might also decrease the corrupt practice of selling lion hunts over and over when clients are not successful or bringing in canned cats when the first baited hunt doesn't bring a cat to bag.

Tracking -> calling -> baiting That's how I would rank it. I have tracked one and would to love do a hunt with a traditional lion caller one day.

jkhunter, Is the gentleman holding the rifle Ivor? If so, we hunted together in Tajikistan. He and his friend were a lot of fun on the trip. Good folks to be with on a tough hunt. Kathi kathi@wildtravel.net 708-425-3552 "The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page."

Calling is sometimes done at an active bait site, as well, to get a lion to return hastily to defend his meat. Will J. Parks, III

Manuel, Since you like to call in game, you may be familiar with some of the early varmint calling books by the Burnham Brothers. In one of them, they did experiment with calling game in Africa and were almost too successful when a pride of lions came to the call. http://www.barnesandnoble.com/...0633-_-2688776361136 According to Murray Burnham, With the right call, just about any wild animal can be called in, but care must be taken when calling dangerous game.
