I am going to SA in July. I found out that my PH has a new rifle and I was thinking about bringing him in some brass and bullets for the new shootin' iron.

My question is: are bullets and brass considered "ammunition" from an import perspective? Note, the caliber of the bullets and brass are NOT the same as the rifle I will be bringing.

Anyone have any thoughts on this? I am a little hesitant to create a situation that will further slow the process of getting through the importation.

thanks,
doug

Douglast

They are "components" that can be put in your luggage , and do not have to be booked in with a rifle and live ammunition .

In 2003 I carried 250 6mm bullets in my checked baggage to South Africa aside from my 11 pounds of ammo for my rifle [.338].

I declared them at entry as "reloading components" and listed the values accurately at $24.00. There was never a comment or question by airline , TSA, RSA Customs, SAP - anyone.

I plan to do it again in August, unless the rules have changed.

Last June I took my P.H. some .500 N.E. brass and bullets.The biggest problem was explaining to T.S.A. in Atlanta that brass and bullets was not loaded ammo and I was not over on ammo weight.

Cry 'Havoc,' and let slip the dogs of war;
That this foul deed shall smell above the earth
With carrion men, groaning for burial.
