My next hunt is going to be for Nyala and I've pretty much decided on the KwaZulu Natal for the ease of the logistics. I've been doing some research and have found a few outfitters that I'm interested in. But, I don't want to make a choice without looking at as many outfitters as possible. Feedback on KZN outfits seems pretty sparse on the internet so I thought that I'd ask here for anyone else's experience.

I don't mind hunting for a week - 10 days for the right animal and would be perfectly happy if I get an honest chance at an big, old buck. I don't need a lodge and would be perfectly happy with tents, cots and bucket showers if the outfitter has outstanding Nyala around.

Does anyone have a good outfitter that they've hunted with in the KZN that they would recommend?

Frank,
Trevor Lake is running a special on Nyala hunting right now, i have seen a posting on another web site. therefore i sugestt that you Give him an e mail or call him.

The Nyala camp is a rustic camp, with hot water, flush toilet, shower, located by a small Zulu village.

I would suggest that you check his web site out first to see if the Nyala he hunts in the free range area of Kwa-Zulu Natal is what you are looking for. I have hunted with him 2 times and have taken a 28 inch Nyala and 2 X 29 inch Nyalas.

Greg Rodriguez used to book with Crusader Safaris. They have property/access to land in KZN, I believe, as well as other areas. Umkomaas sounds right...

Thanks, I've been talking with Trevor, his current special offer is 2X1 and there are not many people who can put up with me. I have to pay relatives to hunt in Africa with me. Big Grin

An hour and a half south of Durban puts you on the border of the East Cape! Big Grin I'll check it out.

Quite a few AHN members, myself included, have hunted with Crusader at their Umkomaas area in KZN. It is a large conservancy of small private properties combined, low-fence - great spot and stalk hunting!!!!

If you search Crusader Safaris on here you will find some hunt reports. tu2

If you can make the time, check out the battlefields in Natal. Foy at Penny Farthing Bed and breakfast in Dundee is a great tour guide. You can do blood river, rorkes drift, isandlhwana and talana hill all in one day.

Good Morning,

I have recently returned with one of my clients from the Mkhuze Game Reserve. I organized the hunt with Gary Kelly Safaris. I am not exaggerating if I tell you we saw at least 100 nyala everyday and some real monsters too. Every year they take 3 or 4 over 30". Gary Kelly Safaris also run a first class operation from start to finish. I highly recommend them. The camp at Mkhuze is a very nice tented camp.

Frank

I have 30 000ha of unfenced concession in the Umkomaas valley.
We dont shoot under 28"

I have 5 Bulls on quota for the season.
We also take great bushbuck on that concession.
We normally tie in a Common Reedbuck, Mountain Reedbuck, Vaal Rhebok on the same hunt if you have not taken one yet.

Here is the last Nyala I took in the valley. It taped 28 1/4"

If you have 10 days to focus on the Nyala only I would say that you could do even better than that.

We took 30" Nyala on that concession and 60" Kudu in the past. These valleys just seem to be getting better each year
Thanks
Ian

+1 for Garry Kelly, 10 days in Mkuze will be hard to beat and a great outfit

Umkomaas can be good and it can be terrible, weather, time of year and very property dependant; and in some cases a dial in scope and flat shooting rifle almost a necessity, the guys do however pull some great bulls out of there from time to time

I have hunted in Natal with Mark DeWet (posts here) this year was the 7th hunt with him. He is based at Zulu Nyala in Hluhluwe. As to the battlefields we did them last month and it took us a day to do Rorkes Drift and Isandhwanda. We stayed at Isibindi a great lodge with a nice game drive and a nice Zulu dance group (from a local high school) show during an authentic Zulu dinner on the ground.
