I've been back from Namibia for right at a year. I'm trying to decide on where to go on my next trip to Africa. My wife has informed me she is going with this time. The wish list for this next trip includes Hippo, Buff, Croc, possibly Giraffe or Leopard. While I loved Namibia, and would realy like to hunt the Caprivi I'm not sure that would be the best place for what I would like to hunt. A guy I used to hunt with suggested Mozambique, but experience with him on the hunt in Namibia and since then has caused me to seriously question his judgement. What locations would you all suggest I look into. Yes it's cocked, and it has bullets too!!!

Wasn't Jochen was it? Moz not a bad suggestion actually, for that selection of species, except perhaps the Leopard and Giraffe. Downside is cost of charter and limited quotas on hippo/croc. For Hippo/Buff/Croc we can fix you up in Zim. There are two styles of hunt available...one is the traditional Zambezi Valley concession hunt. Lots of raw Africa, but daily rates getting up there now. The other is private land...we have one of the few chunks of land left that has not been "liberated" and there are plenty of croc and hippo on a substantial lake on the property, as well as along the river. Buff also present in huntable numbers but double fenced (legal requirement in cattle farming areas). Leopard there as well, go in June or July for best leopard hunting. Since it's private, you can sit over bait at night. You can't do that in most places in the Valley..it's Parks land and they don't allow it. Permanent thatched camp near the lake with indoor plumbing. The advantage of this setup is substantially lower daily rates (no concession/lease fees to amortize) and relatively civilized for the observers. There are also plenty of nice bushbuck on this property and a smattering of other PG. The big question on Zim is what is going to be left after this current paroxysm of political violence? But of course the other side of that coin is this same uncertainty is keeping prices much lower than the same hunt in neighboring countries. There really isn't another reasonably-priced destination for these species. Luangwa Valley could also be worth considering for your choice of animals minus Giraffe. Ahmed Sultan

In reality this next trip is a couple of years off at this point. I'm Just trying to search out the areas that would be good to look at. I will probably try to book a place 2 years out of so if possible. Zim is currently a place there is no way my wife would go to right now. Depending on how things go between now and then it may be a possibility in the future. The past hunting partner doesn't post on this board, and I don't really think he would much know how. He wanted me to show him how to get on here so he could rip on the PH we had in Namibia. The guy has hunted in RSA with another PH 4 times I think it is, and all on high fence concessions. He has had to put no effort into taking any game other than maybe walk a little ways from the truck to get to a shooting position. While in Namibia he just told the PH he was looking for a bigger Kudu than what he currently had (48"). Then he refused to shoot anything smaller than 58" and when then PH told him the likelyhood of finding one of that size in that area was very slim and would be sherely luck if we happened on to one that big, the guy called him a fraud and demanded all of his money back. He stated the PH had to know where Kudu that big or bigger were in the area but was just keeping them for someone who was paying more. Keep in mind this was all hunting open country free ranging animals not a game farm. THe guy was not even willing to climb up another Kopjie after nothing had been shot from one on the first day. I was very tempted to tell him to just go back to the airport and fly home by the 3rd day. He is the epitome of the slob hunter and has stated he would have no problem with shooting a caged or teathered animal if it would go in the record books. He used to work for me but deffinately doesn't anymore. Sorry, Rant mode off. On the other Hand I had a great time and came back with a good clean Hartmans stallion about 10 years old, a 52" Kudu with 12.5" bases, and a 40.5" Gemsbok Bull Yes it's cocked, and it has bullets too!!!

The above, gentlemen, is why you better know who the guy is you hunt with on a 2X1 safari! Gys like the one described above are the idiots who are responcible for the uneducated public's view of Safari hunting! Between guys like this, and the Mark Sullivans of the world will eventually outlaw hunting, all together! Rhys congratulations on your succesful safari, and fine trophies! Hippo Croc and Buffalo can be done in Mozambique, Namibia Caprivi, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Zambia. If you do not want to go to Zim and want a reasonably priced hunt (scratch Tanzania), then you have three options. Caprivi, Zambia or Mozambique. Namibia Caprivi: The Namibia you experienced is nothing like the Caprivi. Might as well be a differenty country. It is that different. Good Buffalo, Hippo and Croc. Can add 3, 5, 7 days for plainsgame in Namibia or in Botswana. I have guys doiung PG in Botswana and Buffalo in Caprivi. Zambia: The Luangwa has it all. Buffalo, Hippo, Croc and plainsgame. Mozambique - I have seen good Croc along the Zambezi and Cahorra Bassa and lots of Hippos. Good Buffalo, but little PG. There are other options here that I am not as familiar with.

If you are looking a couple of years out, my strong suggestion is to book Zim now while prices are reasonable. When Mugabe goes (if not this year then soon) the prices will shoot up to Zambia/Moz levels. T.A.N.Z.A.N.I.A. !!! Great for everything on your wish list (except giraffe which can not be shot (fully protected). The Selous is probably your best choice for what you want....
