a 9.3x62 is a 300 yard rifle max, so why burden yourself and the gun with a scope over 4X is my question...My 3X Leupold give me a great sight picture on an elk at 1000 yards, albiet I'm just looking not shooting at that range..

A fixed power 3 or 4, will gather as much light as the eye can handle..In fact Leupold told me that fixed power scopes gather light better than any varible???????

A nice clean little light rifle with a big huge scope is my idea of an abomination from hell!

Yes Mr Atkinsson you have a point, its just that it seems hard to come by new fixed power scopes. I wanted a 2X or 2.5X fixed scope for my .416 but it couldnt be had, at least not in Finland.

I really dont need a magnification past 6X, maybe not more than 4X. Ill skip the big bell and go with a 40mm. A bit of a compromise -and the illuminated reticle is starting to look like an option.

Cewe,
One of the reasons for me to choose the Leupold Vari X III 2.5-8x36 was that the choosen scope should fit the excisting German claw mount bases. The Leupold was short enough for that.

One other reason was the low weight and with the 36mm it still is OK for hunting late in the evening!

by the way, i bougt the scope at ebay, used from the Mid West in the USA. The price was just under $300! The seller helped me reduce Swedish VAT and Custom tax

Cewe,
Yes, the European manufactures tend towards big huge, heavy scopes for the most part...I believe that is because the do a lot of night hunting which we do not, and the Germans have always over engineered everything they built with the exception of the Mauser rifle, and Paul was an exception to the rule, He was several centurys ahead of the rest of the world and still is.....

It is pretty easy to pick up a 2.5X or 3X used Leupold in the states for about $200 or so....and a 4X Leupold can be found used for a hundred dollar bill.....
