I received this email today from JML Safaris. The formating of the attachment I pulled this from made it harder than hell to copy paste. The trophy fees were a mess when I tried to add them in here. Anyone who thinks they can post it properly is welcome PM me and I'll send them the Word document.

Disclaimer: I am not an outfitter and have no affiliation with them just thought someone might be interested in a cheap Tanzanian 21 day hunt. I have not hunted with them and am not very familiar with them.

I find it obscene for a company to actually come out and tell me how much I should "tip" their staff!

And to add insult to injury, they have the gall to ask for a bonus if I get the animals they have agreed to get me in the first place.

This is the sort of company one should NEVER do business with!

Good point Saeed! The $5,000 bonus struck me a little odd the first time I read it. Like I said I don't know any thing about them just thought someone might be interested.

500grains,

And if you don't like the price one bar charges for beer, you can go around the corner and drink your beer at a cheaper bar! Big Grin [The Outfitter may have a religious reason for excluding alcohol, it may even be totally banned in his camp! Better ask!]

Makes me want to know a bit more about what is meant by a " Supply of fresh food,......" Do they then charge extra for preparing and serving the food? Big Grin

Maybe the Outfitter also have some difficulty in communicating his offer accurately, but I would say "Beware!" and find out!

Maybe the client should bring suitcases with the food he needs for 21 days. And a washing machine to do his own laundry. Perhaps the client should also bring a bicycle in case the outfitter does not provide transportation in the concession.

let me see if i have this right. you discount the daily rate a little on a 21 full bag safari- then charge an extra $15,000 for the 3 primary species on said safari if you are successful ( after paying the normal trophy fees of course). damn, such a deal-sign me up.(oops, i forgot- i still have to pay for booze. in that case, forget it)

I think not! Five grand for a lion tip?? Better to go with an established firm and pay a fair price an tip according to service, not by game taken.

How goofy can these 2nd class outfitters be. I hope at the end of the season they have enough left over (ele, lion, buff) licenses that they can play a game of cards with them.

Actually, these guys have a god reputation for first class tuskers. They have however, missed the mark on their offer. The "bonus" fees have killed them.

They do have a good reputation and have been in the business a long time. English is not their mother tongue so that may be a reason why the offer in English does not sound right? Perhaps they were trying to express something different than the way it sounds......

I would not bury them as outfitters on the above.

I wasn't going to post again on this because I keep getting beat up, but that was my thought. I have no idea how good they are, but they have been around for a long time which would suggest to me they must be doing something right. Also as Bwanamich said English is not their first language or maybe even second best language for that matter so something may have been lost in translation. Just the same buyer beware as I said when I posted it!

I am more that puzzled by this thread.

Jean Michel and his son Jerome are really respected PHs and their reputation is spotless. They are acknowledged as real pros. They have (and still do) taught many PHs in different countries.
Jean Michel is really considered as an old hand who performed in many countries, Cameroon, CAR and Tanzania especially.
Perhaps a look at the huntingreport can help.
hunting report

What is sure is that they don't lack clients. They can be compared to Tanganyka Wildlife Safaris outfit on a smaller scale.

IMHO there is something amiss. One has to scrutinize even more this weird thread.

Had the post read "Different kind of Tanzania Hunt Offer" they may not have been crucified here.

I do not represent them, I do not know them. I have no interest in this, but I do have an observation.

If you shoot your big 3 then you are adding $15,000 to your hunt cost. So, the hunt cost basically increases to what is a normal and acceptable rate for this type of hunt. Which is about $53,000 + their normal trophy fees.

What I assume they are doing is offering a hunt with the final base hunt cost to reflect the success of the hunt.

This is not necessarily a discounted hunt, however I feel it is a very decent and fair offer.

What if you don't want Lion or Leopard? Just Elephant and Buffalo and Sable and Hippo, Croc, etc. Then you are getting a 21-day Elephant Buffalo and plainsgame hunt at a very reasonable cost. Try to find that at these rates with a good solid reputable operator.

It appears to be a fair way to charge for a good hunt, based strictly on your success of the three key species.

Yes, I also think it is a bit ridiculous to charge $1 for a beer on a $50,000 hunt. But, a fair number of operators in Tanzania charge for drinks.

The Latrives are more than fine PH`s but there main AREAS Kilwa and Gombe and some Intercon Blocks in Massailand are not the BEST now in TZ IMO.

I didn't know they hunted Gombe. My uncle and cousin shot some hellish nice buffalo (41" & 43.5") and topi(17.5" & 19"?) there last year with another outfitter. They said there were some nice plains game around including waterbuck, sable, and roan. They saw lion and elephant, but nothing shoot able. Only 7 days though. I believe this hunt is for the Kilwa block, but I could be mistaken.

Wendell Reich and Bwanamich have hit it on the head.

This is a VERY FAIR offer given by a VERY REPUTABLE company. They are asking that you pay a lower than usual daily rate and upgrading the hunt UPON SUCCESS, which is a great deal in high day rate Tanzania.

The fact that English is their second language may have affected the reading of their offer - but it did not deserve the girlish screams it evoked on this forum.

It seems that the main question is: "Is it cheap?". The daily rate is about $1809. I could not figure out the trophy fee for elephant, but for Lion it is $10,400 and for Leopard it is $8,850. Are these good or even reasonable numbers for TZ? I don't know where the $1 per beer is from. I did not see it above. However, I don't see the difference between a "bonus" and just increasing the trophy fee by 5 grand. You still only pay if you shoot the animal.

All,

Jerome emailed me today asking me to post this while he waits to become a member so he can respond to questions/concerns.

Brett

Hello Brett,

Thank you for your Email and no problem for posting it to an accurate reloading forum.

Before I try to join the site to respond can you please post this email.

Hi everybody,

I have read all your coments about our offer and I would like to precise and rectify few things !

It is very interesting to see the reactions of the hunters and to see how people can be "courageous" through internet !

For the one who do not know us, my dad and I were born in France but we are full time PH in Tanzania since 1991 and we manage our own area.
My dad hunts in Africa since 1974 (Uganda, cameroon, C.A.R, etc......)

We now mainly operate in Kilwa (south west Tanzania) where we have our camps and sometimes we use areas who belongs to friends for specific game such as sitatunga in the north west or masai species.
Kai Uwe Denker said we are not using the best areas ! May be ? but has he been in our area ? As far as I know I have never seen him in our area !
What I know is I can give you dozens of recent reference of people who hunted with us and were very happy.

Following the last year troubles in Tanzania with increase of fees we, for the first time since many years have few rooms left for the season. So we made and sent this special proposal.
We never said it was cheap because I do not believe in cheap safaris but I still believe it is a very fair offer for somebody who wants to hunt one or several big five.
Just compare with other outfitters.

Concerning the drinks : Like 90 % of Tanzanian outifitters we put it in the "non included part" but most of the time we will not charge if somebody have a reasonable comsumption.
But it is very expensive to supply alcool in the middle of nowhere and we have notice than when it is free people open it, drink a little bit and then they do not finish it and then order another one colder 1 hour later !!! that is why !

Concerning Tips we suggest 300 or 400 USD a week; this is a suggestion, not obligation but we write it down so hunters can make their budget and have no surprise once in the bush !

Andrew, don't be ridiculous, we do not charge for preparing and serving the food ! and I can add you would be very surprise by the quality of the food !!!

If any of you has questions, do not hesitate to contact me.

Sorry for my bad english

All the best

Hi Jerome, I look fwd to you joining AR and participating in our discussions.

Regarding your Offer, I hope you understand how it could come across (lower day rates just to raise the TF's). However, I for one was comfortable with it, having shot the various species, hunting at a lower rate and being selective on the shooting is quite attractive to me.

Also please understand there is a bit of built-up frustration regarding the rapidly rising costs of hunting Africa, and Tanzania in particular.

To clarify, "mboga biga bwana" made the comment about your area above, he is not "Kai Uwe Denker" but quoting him in the signature line of his posts.

I try to keep out of these internet trials nowadays, but FWIW, I've never met the Latrive family, but we do have mutual friends and I do know them by reputation and they have a good reputation in the industry and also with our mutual friends.

Regarding food and camps etc, they're a French company and have the reputation of doing things in a very stylish manner........... and that's always a good thing. Wink
