If we are talking hunting books in general and not just Africa, I miss two books on your lists... "Meditations on Hunting" by Ortega y Gasset and "John Macnab" by John Buchan. I think they are the two of the more important non-Swedish books in my hunting library. The first is serious and philosophical, the latter is charming; a novel about three bored gentlemen poaching in the Highlands of Scotland.

Martin

The first and best book I have read about Africa was not particularly about hunting but about the history and people.

I highly recommend - "The Covenant" by James Michener. His books are long but we found the information in this one helped us to understand the South African people and various issues they face.

If you are headed to RSA, read this one first.

A second vote for "The Covenant" by James Michener. It's a historical novel so it's not exactly pure history (as in a history book) but it will give you a good undertstanding of the history, people and culture of South Africa. I took the book with me for reading material on the flight to South Africa and while in camp.

My PH and his wife (both Afrikaaners) were pleased and surprised when they learned that I knew a little of the Afrikaaner and South African history. IMHO, displaying an interest in learning about the history and culture of the people that you will be visting is a good way to help make friends.

I appreciate all the responses. It has given me some excellent ideas of what books to look for next. I have been able to find some of the suggested books on Ebay for super prices and have added them to my collection. Should have the Boddington I found early next week.

I have read several Micheners, but not "The Covenant". I will have to read that one. His "Chesapeak" is still my favorite book of his.
