Do you know which countries have real black powder available to hunters? Problems? Solutions? Thanks.

South Africa is the only reliable source. I imported 20kgs a while back and been selling it off to clients as required. It was elephant brand. Have had serval US clients over the yars arrive with two boxes of shotgun shells reloaded with BP and I loaded 50 rounds with AA5744 to bring back to Africa to try.

Ganyana, is correct about RSA being the most consistant, but even that is no sure thing, unless you get it from Ganyana. The shotgun shell thing is the best way to gring your black powder in. Bring a 10 or 12 ga shotgun, and as much ammo as you can, but load the shell with spent primers, and no shot, so each case is full of black powder, with a wad on top to prevent leaking. The reason for spent primers is to avoid some one getting blown up by setting one off in a shotgun. If you also bring one box of smokeless loaded shotshells for the shotgun, then seal the black powder rounds, and paint a dab of red paint on the black powder shells so the live shells don't get mixed with the black powder supply! You're going to cut the mouth off the plack powder shells anyway, and throw them away, another reason for the dead primers, so if they are burned with the camp garbage, they won't hurt the camp staff. ....Mac >>>===(x)===> MacD37, ...and DUGABOY1 DRSS Charter member "If I die today, I've had a life well spent, for I've been to see the Elephant, and smelled the smoke of Africa!"~ME 1982 Hands of Old Elmer Keith

Would be a whole lot easier just to have the PH pick up a few cans. Just have to find the place with a few cans. I thought South Africa had a fairly large group of black powder shooters but maybe that has changed. The shot shell deal doesn't allow for much powder. I guess if you use both boxes you will have plenty for the average hunt. I can't be the first or only traditional muzzleloading hunter to have this problem.

Welcome to Africa- nothing is ever simple. If you are comming to Zim, send me a PM and I may be able to help. In SA, if you are booking with a reputable outfitter who regularly caters for BP hunters, he will be able to make a plan. Send Andrew McLaren a PM. He is both an outfitter and a Keen BP shot.
