Doxycycline is still a preferred treatment for rickettsial disease. Children can take Doxy; however, there have been reports of tooth staining with long term use. Some current 2007-2008 studies and references refute this claim and some indicate that the staining is temporary even in children under eight years of age. I'd suggest some on-line literature reserach and discussion of your findings with your physician and a pediatric dentist. You must weigh the risk of a 10 day course of treatment for a serious illness against a potential staining. This will rule out Doxy as prophylaxsis for malaria but it can be considered for treatment of tick bite fever, etc. Doxycyline is most often listed as the preferred treatment for African tick bite fever. Other alternatives include chloramphenicol and ciprofloxacin but these may not be as effective. "Cleverly disguised as a responsible adult."

http://www.brainerdclinic.com/forum_tick.php The link above will take you to an article written by Dr. Rick Roberts. Dr. Roberts is one of the leading authorities on Lymes'. He may be able to answer your questions. I don't have an email address for him, and he is no longer listed on BMC's staff page. If you're interested, though, he shouldn't be too hard to contact. Dr. Roberts and a colleague (Dr. Koucher - peds) treated my son for Lymes a couple of summers ago. My son was 4 at the time and responded well to antibiotics. Hope this helps. Best wishes, friar Our liberties we prize, and our rights we will maintain.

This is one of those cases where you really should go and see your kid's doc. If they seem at all uncertain, ask for a pediatric ID referral. Diagnosis over the internet is a BAD idea.
