Hello,

I am sure this has been asked before, but I was inspired by the camo question.

Which countries require a 375 or bigger for buffalo, and which ones would be ok with a 9.3?

Thanks!

Chasseur,

Benin, the CAR, Senegal, Burkina are O.K. with a 9.3. This permits to use 9.3-74R doubles and 9.3-62 or 9.3-64 rifles, all the most used guns for driven hunts in France.
In any case, I am not aware of a minimum and some use 300. An American ambassador killed 2 buffs with one 300 Weath bullet. For big game the most used remains the 375HH. The frequent safari hunters love using rifles or doubles over 375HH. The newbees are fine with 9.3 or 375HH.

About the only place you might not get away with a 9.3x62 is a few RSA states that require a 375, but I doubt that anyone really cares...

Zim is good with a handloaded 9.3x62 to a energy figure, but again no one is looking or checking cartridge cases.. same in Tanzania...

The 9.3x62 and 9.3x74 is used a lot in most countrys of Africa and without any problems that I know of.

Africans are basically a reasonable and logical lot when it comes to calibers, as long as you don't wound a big 5 animal and it kills someone, then it can get a bit cheeky it you used your rockchucker...

Ray.....are you actually saying that if one really wanted to....and your PH was willing to allow it and you used a very good bullet like an A-Frame or Northfork in such a gun as a .338 Win Mag or a .358 Norma Mag that it's ok???

The .358 Norma actually has 4,400 ft-lb of muzzle energy.....slightly more than the .375 H&H!!!

I have never understood the "use the minimum" approach to dangerous game hunting. Even if you are legally allowed to do it, that doesn't make it a good idea. Although, I'll make an exception for the classic .375, which is certainly more than up to the task on buff.

PH's have been known to bend the rules from time to time when clients want to use a .338 or .358 or the like AND are using good bullets AND can shoot AND the circumstances of the shot are favorable, not to say ideal.

But I've always wanted (not always had, but always wanted) MORE than enough of anything needed for the task at hand--especially "enough gun" when after dangerous game that can tear me a new rectum.

Thanks for all the replies.

I have a 9.3x74r that I hand load for and I shoot and hunt with a lot. I was thinking if go for buff at some time using a rifle I am familar with could make more sense than buying a 375 or larger that I would not get a chance to hunt with much. Just thinking out loud...
