What are the thought on using 9.3X74R Woodleigh solids on game like Hartebeest and Blesbok?

I have never killed a Blesbok, but have killed any number of Hartebeests (Kongoni) primarily for camp meat. I used my .300 H&H Model 70 with Winchester 180 grain Silvertip bullets (a no longer available controlled expansion bullet) with unfailingly satisfactory results.

Using solids on plains game would serve no useful purpose that I can think of, and would probably be counterproductive because of the small wound channel and exit wound. With proper expanding bullets, probably in the lower weight/higher velocity range, your 9.3X74R should be an excellent killer.

Of course, if you are using a double rifle, you will need to use the load your rifle is regulated for.

Why not a regular 232 or 286gr soft?

Agree 100%! I've shot most all of the plains game with the 9.3 and 286 gr. Nosler partitions. The big, relatively slow moving bullet produces minimal meat damage and tremendous penetration.

The 286 gr Woodleigh soft works great on kudu.

I have shot an Eland with 9,3x62 with Bridger FN solid - you can see exit near the cartridge, entry was between neck and shoulder on the opposite side:

Eland made 80m and was found dead, blood spoor was abundant right from the beginning.

Then there was a Bushbuck shot with 9,3x74R GSC FN solid - entry:

...exit:

through the heart:

Bushbuck made 30m run and died - blood spoor was abundant.

So all in all - great - mind you those were FN solids and wound channel was bigger than with RN's where greater fleeing distances are to be expected, also both Hartebeest and Blesbok are herd animals and solids will whistle through - wounding of another animal is hard to avoid...but if those are the only ones at hand I'd use them accordingly.

The reason for the 9.3X74R is I am using my drilling for the pygmy and the solid is good for them. The 286 softs are a bit eratic in this gun but the solids shot (3) a ragged hole and that accuracy is just so good. I will continue working on getting a soft load that shoot good in this gun. I emailed my PH and he is no too concerned but of course like me he would prefer softs but shooting spot on is most important. Like everyone says "shot placement". Thanks for the replys.

Hell, if the solids shoot that good, I wouldn't worry about it. Use the solids, hit him right and don't look back. When are you going? My son and I leave for Zim, in 23 days.

The strength of Game has not changed since Bell was hunting with FMJs. Put it through both lungs and you should be fine. You will have to be careful for what is behind the target but if you have to shoot through brush you will probably be better of.

By all means - and try to get a quartering shot - facing towards you aim for an entry shoulder joint, facing away aim for an exit shoulder joint. Solids that break bones make wonders.

Butch, 2 of the little guys are to replace two I took before and were lost in the fire. I prefer to hunt close and use the 16 ga on the drilling and the rifle if we can't get in close enough. The Grysbok will probably be with the rifle as they are hunted at night. I was mostly concerned about the bigger guys with the solids - pass thru etc. If I am sucessful I can then move on and have the tiny ten done. It then becomes an oddesy for the Spiral Horned.

Just my opinion but I think you should get busy and work up a load with the Nosler partitions that will shoot, and if you insist on useing solids my pick in a double rifle would be the North Fork 286 gr CPS (Cup Point Solid) many mono-metal solids are not good for your rifle if it is a double barrel. The concern on the part of the PH should be a real wake-up message!

DOJ, I forgot you were after the little guys. A Drilling is perfect...with all the brush in the understory where they live, a shotgun is often the best weapon. And with a FMJ in 9.3, the cartridge is about as big around as a Suni's leg, so it should do the trick! I'd like to get back to Moz to hunt those little buggers again.
