Why is DSC different?

I've never had an interest to become a member of SCI for a variety of reasons...mainly because of the comments generally found on the latest negative threads/posts the past couple years here on the forum.

And today Brett's thread has prompted me to start my own as I've been interested in becoming a member of DSC based on the many positive comments made here in the past several years.

And before I sign-up as a DSC member right now... I'm genuinely wondering and asking dear ladies and gents...

What makes DSC so unique and attractive to us hunters?

I had a booth at the DSC convention and my credit card machine broke down on at me in the middle of convention. They lent me theirs with no strings attached, didn't even charge me for the use. Another year, my booth was not delivered until the first day at midnight, they made sure someone was available on the floor to receive, delivery, and help us set up the booth. This was at MIDNIGHT! Didn't charge me an arm or a leg, just the cost of drayage, what I normally would have paid. More importantly, you can talk to any of the members and they will listen and followup on your problems or complaints. They are not afraid to admit they made mistakes and they take pains to fix them. Never had a bad experience with them during my 11 yrs of doing business with them.

They listen.

I am a member of both SCI and DSC and to many others to mention. I think they all have their pluses but I have not found any negatives with DSC and hope to be able to attend DSC in person in 2014.

You may belong to both and I encourage you to join both, as I have. SCI has a permanent presence in Washington, D.C. and is actively engaged in protecting your rights as a hunter.

Roland: I believe DSC's willingness to listen to criticism and make needed changes is one difference (I'm referring to our first convention at Dallas Convention Center...the move in and move out process was horrible, I would not have blamed many exhibitors for not returning, but we listened and fixed it ). Breezy and Mike pretty much sum it up...we listen and take action if warranted. If you live close enough Roland, come to a monthly meeting and see what DSC is all about. Or you can PM me and I will provide more literature than is available on line.

DSC is a mostly volunteer run organization.
They have a small paid staff & the rest are there to help because they believe in what they are doing.
If I did not live 5hrs. away, they would see me very often at the headquarters doing whatever I could to help out.
Anytime I have needed help, all I had to do was call, someone helped me PDQ.
Great staff of fine folks.

My wife overheard an exhibitor at the DSC conv. that we know complaining about some signage blocking his booth. She went and found someone wearing an orange vest and explained the situation to him.
That gentleman immediately went and fixed the problem.
I don't think that would have been handled as quickly if at all elsewhere.
DSC cares.

In the early 80's, when I was going to the US for flight training, Texas was the place I chose.

They made me feel right at home from the minute I arrived there.

And the best part was they have a fantastic sense of humor. There was none of this PC bullshit there then.

DSC is happy to let you bring the whole family along to enjoy and learn.

The next generation will have an important and difficult job to maintain this outdoor sport.

DSC (through BigGuy458), in the past, supported AR members by subsidizing our AR Friday night dinners in Dallas, provided us a room in which to relax during the convention and made sure that we had monies left over to donate some real bucks to a P.H. who was severely injured by an AD.

No one asked DSC for that help and kindness. It is just the nature of the guys who are members and leaders.

I became a life member a couple of years ago (after about 10 conventions). I'm quite happy I did.

The difference in my membership in SCI and DSC... I don't feel like I'm lost in the shuffle with DSC.

As an aside, on the first morning of the 2013 convention, some late coming exhibitors were obtaining registration info, etc. DSC had a coffee cart with sweets moving up and down the line for them and volunteers awaiting to help them get to their booths, answer questions, make sure all was ready for them. Impressed me and I'm sure a few of the vendors! It's just the way they do things in Texas, I guess.

As someone else stated all of the various organizations have their pluses and minuses. I have belonged to DSC as an annual member a couple of times, never had a desire to try and join SCI.

My main reason for liking DSC is that they are more open toward the average, common person. Maybe it is something to do with being Texas based, but they make themselves and their organization open to the average person that likes to hunt but for whatever reason is not a globe trotter with hundreds of trophy animals to their credit.

I don't get to attend the convention as often as I like. It would be nice for me at least to be able to attend the AR festivities at one and met other AR members. Over the last few years however the convention is going on when I am busy guiding hunters.

As much as I enjoy visiting the various booths and looking at the excellent taxidermy work displayed and simply soaking up the whole atmosphere of being around so many examples of the positive side of hunting, I will take being in the field on a hunt over that Dallas traffic any day.

Just from an extremely ordinary person/hunter in my opinion DSC makes a person feel welcome be they a multi-millionaire that goes on several hunts/safari's a year, or just some factory worker barely scraping by that maybe gets to hunt deer a couple of weekends each season.

Breezy: I can think of only one exhibitor that had both of the problems you mention...glad we could work it out.

The volunteers are friendly. The volunteers are putting money into the organization. The paid staff is putting money into the organization. The are all happy to have us as guests and make us feel that way.

My wife and I joined DSC in 2012 and attended the convention. We had such a great time that we upgraded our annual membership to life membership. We attended this years convention and already reserved our room at the Omni for 2014.

We look forward to when we can move back to Texas and become more active in DSC and the DEF.

Great organization with great people supporting a just and noble cause.

Saeed - Were you at Randolph? A friend of mine was a trainer there, in the early 70's though.

A longtime exhibitor at both DSC and SCI said it best when he said, "people go to DSC because they want to, they go to SCI because they feel they have to.

I belong to both DSC and SCI, and I've attended both conventions. They are very similar, no doubt. But to me, there is a feeling--an AURA--that SCI is more about competition and collecting trophies and "slams", whereas DSC is more about the hunting, rather than the collecting. It just seems a little more relaxed and friendly in Dallas, a feeling that the DSC guys like Carter and Cheatham and others can take pride in.

They are certainly more alike than unalike, but there is that subtle difference.

I have been to both. I like them both. DSC is smaller. More relaxed . Interestingly , some people are harder to get a chance to speak to at DSC than SCI. Had a blast at my first trip to DSC this year. We are going back.
