First time
Just completed a safari with some first timers to Africa and it was an experience for all. Shot some good shit and our main quarry was Buffalo.

This chap got chomped by a Hippo which dragged him by the legs into the deepest depths of the Kafue.

We also had an very intense stand off with a big Mamba.

Happy to say we all survived albeit a bit shaken and stirred.

Report to follow.

The impact was likened to a car crash. There was no warning, nothing we could do. I had the client covered with the double by the time the boat righted itself.

The black mamba was eyeballing me down the barrel of my double but I was loathe to shoot as the Buffalo were only a few feet behind it.

My clients experienced elephant charges and a close encounter with a wounded (poached) Buffalo.

The hippo incident confirmed that hunting in real Africa is not for the faint hearted. The hippo came out of the blue and we had all been extremely cautious during our river trip. The river was crystal clear and for the most only a few inches deep. The boat was carried and pushed most of the time.

I can't help to think this is the perfect thread to point a new poster to when they ask about the difference between hunting PG on a game ranch without DG present and going to "real Africa" for a PG hunt.

Granted there was buffalo on the menu here but it could just as easily been a Sable hunt with the same excitement tossed in at no extra "charge" (intentional play on words).

I thought Saeed has said repeatedly that these animals are not dangerous and that they never charge and that a man with a rifle can always kill them prior to anything bad happening and it only takes one shot to kill a buffalo and if it takes more your not doing it right, and .....!!!

All evidence to the contrary! Roll Eyes

Damn fine buffalo there Andrew. But I still want a round in my chambers (2 of them)! Cool

Hi Todd,

In this situation we (three) were hit from under the boat. If the forward client was holding a rifle it would have either ended up his bottom or the bottom of the river.

I would have hated to have a loaded gun bouncing around the boat during those brief moments.

My double was lying next to me on the bag, open and cartridges in chamber. The force of the impact snapped it shut and I nearly lost the bloody thing. Anyhow it was now ready to fire.

It was difficult enough to get the chap back on the boat, hold a rifle and reverse the boat all at the same time.

When shit happens.

Thanks Andrew the hunt was incredible. A bit "too real" at time but it's the reason I picked you over Namibia or South Africa. That's my buddy in the pic above and the one that had a hippo latch onto his leg. When I get my computer ill type up a hunt report. I can't put in ALL the details because it's going into a couple of articles, but I'll include enough.

We both bought one for the trip and it has it's pluses and minuses. Main drawback is it's not as easy to bring your binos up and down. Overall, I would bring them again.

Well there is another drawback, if you are swimming up from the bottom of the river after a hippo pulls you under, if they are open it catches the water pretty bad. Big Grin Eeker

Hi Andrew, was that a hippo cow or a bull? And were you targeted or was it a case of the hippo coming up for air and colliding with your boat? If it was trophy bull it would be cool going after it in a future hunt!

The hippo was a bull and we simply drifted into his hole and he took objection to that. We suspect the attack was a warning as he had ample time afterwards to follow it through.

The fact that the client fell into the Hippo's mouth and did not receive any serious injury sort of confirms that theory. However a tusk did go clean through his trouser leg. And punched two holes in my boat!
