I know this is an old topic, but I was looking for some opinions on my shipping quote.

Airfreight: $275.90
Departure fee: $27.59
Documentation Fee: $95
Airline security: $56.25
Cartage: $13.25
Marine insurance: $47.00
Facility Fee: $51.51
Customs house brokerage: $412.88
Delivery to residence: $255.43

TOTAl $1234.91

I recieved this estimate from Flora and Fauna
Does this sound about right. I would have rather cleared these trophies myself if it wasn't for the warthogs included.
Thanks

That quote sounds about right depending on how much everything weighed. I just got all my stuff back last week and the cost was a little over $1400 for 211 kg of weight.

Having those warthogs are killers on the price, they make it more difficult to clear and then I am not allowed to pick the stuff up myself and have to pay ground shipping to my taxidermist. But I can not resist those warthogs when I am hunting.

Maybe I am out of the loop....but how much stuff are we talking about here? Mounted or just dipped and packed? I can tell you that I paid about this much for a crate full of 10 Zim mounts about four years ago.

Best,

John

Why do you have to pay Marine insurance when you are shipping via Airfreight?

What's the deal on warthogs? I'm off to Tanzania in early Sept. I already have a warthog shoulder mount. If it's a big deal, I'll pass them up on this trip.

Thanks,

I was told they have to be cleared by a customs official and shipped to a USDA approved taxidermist

Thanks Dilman,

Must be some new disease they carry that we don't want. Five years ago I didn't run in to that.

Would the same rules apply if I were bring back just the skull/tusks but no backskins for the warthog?

How about tusks only no skull and no skin?

thanks,
Mario

I don't think you need this insurance unless you are shipping ocean cargo. My last air quote did not have this.

Widowmaker,

I'll take luck over brains any day. Sadly, I'm generally short of both!

No pig for me this trip.

I recently asked the same question to Coppersmith's and the answer is that if you have a bleached skull and tusks the same rules apply. However, if you take that same skull on tusks and mount them on a plaque then they do not apply as they are considered finished taxidermy.

As far as the Marine insurance goes it covers the value of your trophies in case anything happens to them being shipped by air or ocean. The title Marine insurance is a little confusing on this as it does seem to imply ocean.

Total was $1,244.25. Tack that on to the $1200 dip ship and pack by my outfitter in Africa......Because of that damn wart hog it had to be shipped to a USDA licensed Taxidermist. Only 2 in the whole state. He charged anothe $100 to recieve it. Oh and they sent my partners wart hog Ivory with my shipment. Hope my Ivory is in his box !!!

Interesting. The single largest line item is "Customs house brokerage" at $412.88. I assume this is the fee for Flora and Fauna. If so, something seems amiss when the greatest fee from a cargo shipment from Africa is for someone in NY, NJ, or another import location to "bring it in."

The brokerage fee for our shippment was $536.00.The cost for shipping was only $660.00 from RSA to Ithaca,NY.All other fees and insurance was $590.00.If you went and cleared the crate your self you sure would save alot of monies.

The state side shipping is almost the same as the air freight from Africa.

Timny,

I'd love to clear the stuff myself in Miami and just drive home with it but the warthog's shot down that idea. It just doesn't save me enough to clear the other trophies myself, then still have to pay a broker to clear the warthogs in New York

Maybe I'm being dense here, but am I to understand that I can't get a warthog mounted in Africa and shipped mounted over here? I have to have the mount done by one of two USDA-approved taxidermists here? That wasn't the case when I went to RSA a few years ago. (I don't think.)

You can have your warthog mounted in Africa and shipped to the US without having to worry about the USDA since it would be considered finished taxidermy.

My shipment from RSA was with Tracks Freight. We were in constant contact via Fax E-mail and telephone. My shipment went air freight to Atlanta (They have a USDA entry point) Then it went air freight to Saint Louis. Before that I received a called from Customs in Atlanta about the Warthog. I gave them the name and address of my Taxidermist who has a USDA permit($500 and you get inspected once a year by the state Vets office) They checked the information on their computer them released my shipment to Saint Louis. When called by the freight office in Saint Louis I went to Saint Louis (Of course I was armed with a letter from my Taxidermist saying I was his agent and a copy of his USDA permit). I went to the customs office and they said something about needing to inspect my shipment and I point out that USDA in Atlanta had released it and they said I was correct so they stamped release papers and I went back to the freight office and paid them a small fee($90 I think)and they loaded my crate on to my truck. I paid no duties at customs and since they did not ask for my taxidermist's papers I did not bring it up. I am retired military and when ask for ID I use my military ID and I am on my best most polite behavior. I think it really helps as many of the Customs agents and TSA agents are former military. I missed my connection in Detroiton my return from RSA due to the long line at Customs. The TSA agent inspecting my guns took me to the ticket agents of NWA got me re-booked on the next fight them took my guns and me up stairs; checked them in, then sent me on my way through 1st class check-in. The hold time we takled about our guns and our service in the middle East.
