DRC Ashley Judd Hmmmm......

Something seems off about this story.
A lot of you probably heard that the actress Ashley Judd broke her leg (pretty severely-no joke) in DRC. Her “partner” is involved in some sort of bonobos primate research there, and she broke her leg while hiking pre-dawn near the research center.
This is where it gets odd: she says it took them 5 hours to find her. Apparently, a tracker was with her for at least part of the time. She got evacuated to Joburg, where a surgeon re-established decent arterial perfusion of her leg, and then a medi-jet back to the US for instrumentation/fixation of the leg.
So what’s odd to me is that she’s hiking in the dark, unaccompanied, in DRC, no walkie-talkie or sat phone, and then it takes them 5 hours to find her.
If it were someone else (and of course I’m not implying anything here) I might think “accidental tourist gets drunk, lost outside of camp and is found hours later”.
Anyone know what really happened from sources in DRC? Just curious.

I thought she looked good like 20 years ago in “Double Jeopardy” but that was it. Has she done anything since?

Does seem strange...my wife and I were in DRC in 2019, also at a primate rescue center. I sure as hell wouldn’t be taking a “pre-dawn“ hike.

What I understood is that it took 5 hours on the back of a motor to get her to a town with some form of medical care, and I'm sure she would have been with a tracker at the time of the incident, trackers are always present. But as far as Bonobo or other great ape research in the Congo, I think they do pretty hardcore stuff. And yes, probably without walkie-talkie as there is no radio network and distances are too big, they would probably keep sat phones but I can imagine keeping those going in a rainforest for months on end might be a challenge. They probably use in-reach gps's these days.
But still, if you're hours away from camp and something happens, and you send a message to camp to come and get you, it will take hours to get to you, and then hours to get you out. And probably a decent amount of time to assemble equipment and people in camp to get to you.

I don’t wish her personal I’ll...

But it is certainly easy enough to take a walk around camp on your own when I’ve been hunting in Africa. I let someone know and take a rifle, but I’ve never been told that I had to have an escort... except when hunting. Occasionally I’ve been told it’s not a good idea (and they always say why), and that’s the end of it... then I don’t do it. All it takes is mutual respect for others.

Beyond that, I checked and I don't care.

BushPeter,

That would make sense, but read her account again.
After she broke her leg she laid on the forest floor for 5 hours before they "found" her. A tracker names Papa Jean found her, then got help. After that they improvised a hammock carry, and it took 3 hours to reach camp. Then the motorbike ride was 6 hours to a medavac station.
Very odd.

I'm kind of in the "who cares" crowd and it all seems fishy. If her boyfriend really is involved in Bonobo research in DRC, she should know better than to wander around in the dark unaccompanied. The evacuation story seems a little overdramatic, but I'm back to why should I care?

I have met and talked to her in person. She is a dishonest, worthless individual who blames her mom and sister for everything and says they ruined her life. She is far from a nice person.
