I can't answer for Uganda, but I hunted Roan in Cameroon in Mar of 2004 and saw thousands of them. I finally took a bull a little over 30 inches in horn length on the 7th day of a 12 day hunt. mac

There were lots of them in the Muhesi area of Tanzania in 2001. George

Although roan might be extinct, or on the verge of extinction in Uganda (and I for one didn't see any during the month I was in that country), it is far from extinct in west africa. It's actually quite plentifull in countrys like Burkina Faso and Benin. Erik D.

Quote: ALF, I see that wild roan are extinct in Swaziland, but we were happy to see that they had a breeding program going on in the Mkaya game reserve. Both for roan and sable. Hopefully these will eventually be numerous enough to restock depleated areas in the tiny kingdom, and perhaps other countrys. Erik D.

There are some limited numbers of Roan on private ranches in Zambia, we have a small number ourselves possibly 25 plus // maybe considerably more, it is difficult to estimate in the bush unless one can do a survey with chopper. I have no idea how many in the GMA's and National Parks Peter

Dear Kathi, Many many thanks for your providing rare and most interessing datas. I roamed in Burkina Faso and Benin, and every day I was seeing hundreds of roans (Koba). This antelope is really alive in Western Africa (ex French Equatorial) in every country where hunting is legal. This is the lions most prised preys, may be thats why lions arent rare. I saw at the TV the roan is the species the most removed or smuggled to SA and Namibia farms and sadly to unworthy countries, poor toys for despicable presidents. May be in South and East Africa, Roan dont find a suitable biotope, because of the growing encroaching agriculture and settlements? Thanks your running the siren. Friendly kisses Jean Bernard
