Now that both shows are fresh in peoples mind, I would be interested in hearing comparisons and contrasts of the shows. I have been to Reno several times, but may switch to Dalls next year for a change.

Thanks in advance for your descriptions.

Well, I don't know which is class and which is greed, I just know in the past I have usually gone to both, but didn't go to Reno this year, don't know that I missed anything, however, I paid $15 to get into the DSC show, had a wonderfull time! It normally costs me about $1,500 to go to Reno. Go figure?

Can't compare the two but I will say for a first timer, SCI was flat out information overload Eeker
Just how many PH's, Safari Companies or Booking Agents does one need to visit?
Highlights: Searcy Double Rifles, Dakota, Chapuis, even Blaser had an great display Eeker animal
I will not go to SCI for a while. Dallas next year.

I have gone to Reno every year, but would like to try DSC for a change of pace. I usually have my choices made, and just book my hunt and then spends remaining time with friends. My wife found little to her liking, and thought $125 for one day was a rip-off. However, she and my daughter-in-law thought $240 apiece at the spa on Thursday was "wonderful". Go figure.

I can not compare the two, but believe I can add useful input for the first timer to SCI Reno.
I found Reno to be info overload if you don't
go with a plan (even if you do!). I had a list ahead of time for about 25 of the hundreds of vendors I definitely wanted to see. My plan was to see them first, then visit the others. Didn

Comparing apples and oranges. Nothing against DSC but you can Do Dallas in a couple hours, but Reno takes a couple days.

This is a bit enlightening. I had always thought the DSC show was a sort of "SCI south". But I have never been to the DSC show.

Is the DSC show simply smaller or is it a distilled version of the SCI show? You know, all the real names without the rift-raft.

Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry
Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure.

I can't compare the two because I haven't done Dallas yet,(notice yet)

I will do Dallas hopefully next year.

But will always go to Reno, yes I think $250.00 for 4 days it a bit steep, I will go. I talk with alot of people I know there. I can barely do the whole show in 4 days. Hell if I wasn't at the show I'd be off spending the money some other way, and I'm sure alot more too!

I think anybody that is shorting the Dallas show has not been in the last few years. It is coming on strong, and a lot more economical than Reno. Not to write off Reno, it is still the daddy of them all.

This was only my first time visiting the DSC show, and I enjoyed it.

I must say, there were a LOT more men wearing diamond-bezeled Rolexes at the DSC show than I've ever seen, and I go to Las Vegas frequently. Wink

Will, it is evident you haven't been to the DSC show, at least not in the last ten years. I don't think you could look at one row very well in 2 hours! There were 2006 exibiters there, and all the top names are represented From Kurr&Downey's Tanzania Game Trackers, down to hunts for dove in Mexico. And Purdey, down to Smith&Wesson. Wink

By the way I'm reading your book and it is a hit, so far! beer

I've been to both, Dallas for the first time this year and I was in Reno in 04 ( my third). Reno's much bigger but I found DSC very enjoyable and certainly much better value for the money. If money's not a factor, you owe it to yourself to go see Reno, but DSC is the kind of Convention I can get used to going on a regular basis. jorge

Excuse me, but I'm new here. Is the $250 for admission to the show/exhibits?

Sure Reno is big, but there is such a thing as overkill, at some point it is just duplication. And to just walk up and down the rows, and do a brief stop at the things that interest you, it can be done in a few hours. It is just that it costs ten times as much to get in the door at Reno as it does at Dallas, and as is typical when a convention comes to town, they double the hotel rates as compared to the day before. And if I recall, yes it is about $250 just to get in the door and walk around, and of course if the wife comes make it $500.

Next year the Dallas Show is scheduled for January 11-14 and SCI is January 24-27. So Dallas will have the advantage of giving you first shot at the outfitters before they go to Reno. [It appears that SCI will be in Reno in 2007 and New Orleans in 2008].

Regards,

Terry

Terry,

SCI International signed a deal with Reno through 2009. there was a signed contract to go to New Orleans, then Katrena hit, contract canceled. SCI will be in Reno through 2009. The convention center agreed to add on about 50,000 sq. ft. more and they are knocking down some walls to make the rooms bigger.

RB Hunt,

I payed 59 dollars a night for all 5 nights at the Altantis, which is right next to the convention center. We are two very different people, I was very interested in just walking around, checking out all the things, took me all of 4 days to do it!

And if you do that whole show in a few hours, well maybe you shouldn't go, yes it is a waste of money for you and your wife

I guess to be fair about it we will have to do both shows next year. What do you think, Ron?

I have not been to Reno, but I do plan on going in the next couple of years just to see it. I am definately going to be a regular at DSC; we had such a great time there this year we are already planning next year's trip.

I met some nice people in Reno, but this was two trips there for me the first and last. I hope to go to DSC next year as it is earlier in the month. As for SCI being a large show well it was big as goes the prices but as to size it was pretty small, you have to go to the Eastern Sports show in Harrisburg Pa. to see a BIG show. Smiler
