To my friends in RSA, I am sorry for the red tape you have to live with, but if I am spending my hard earned bucks and can do it in a friendly enviorment rather than an over regulated enviorment I sure will. I understand if one is just transiting thru RSA (Joberg) and do not exit the international terminal one can check the baggage thru and not have the hassel, my destination is Windhoek. Yea I will have to suffer the red tape at least one more time because I can only hunt Vaal Rehbok in the EC, eh.

Complaining on this thread about the RSA s.n.a.f.u.is like preaching to the choir. Nothing will get done. I suggest we follow the advise of a couple of the other posters here, and send your feelings to the Dept.Of Tourism, P.H.A.S.A. and others. The squeaky wheel gets the grease you know.

Were you flying on South African Airways all the way?

They are trying to make it sound like if you check the guns
through from Atlanta to Vic Fall, Harare or wherever out of SA, then you don't have to go through this permit business. (And not doing an overnight layover.)

Therefore, that is the reason for the question.

Thanks for the additional imput

That is a great idea, although I doubt we could change a law that has been campaigned against at the local level from the earliest stages...

RSA is just becoming africanized, which means that dumb red tape and more opportunities for bribery will become more common. Just as long as the authorities don't become too bothersome, I don't think RSA will have any problems finding willing hunters in the short-term, considering the downward spiral of Zimbabwe and the cost of Botswana/Tanzania...

Can anyone give a comparison with Namibia on entry requirements for firearms?

Entry to Namibia in early July was simple. Only other hunter was on our flight. We went to the firearms section, showed the rifle and serial #'s, showed our US 4457 proof of ownership form and declared how many bullets and what brand they were. If I go back to Namibia and RSA continues to be this complicated, it's good to know air Namibia flies from Frankfurt direct. Bob
