If......

.....you were considering a trip to Affrica, and definately wanted a zebra, and were thinking about an eland, and you have a 30-06. Would You buy/build a 300 H&H, or a 9.3x62, or hunt with the 30-06 and use the money you save for more game. FWIW, I really have no need for the 9.3 or 300 in the hunting I do here in Texas and it would probably become a 'safe queen". capt david

Use the money you'd have spent towards taxidermy or to fund another animal or your next trip to Africa.

If you limit yourself to putting Barnes 180 grain TSX's in the heart/lungs of zebra or eland you will have no problem. My daughter's trophies are proof of that.

That said, I know where a 9.3x62 Model 70 is available. It was rebarrelled and tuned by a Guild gunsmith. I'll bet you could get for around $1400 with Talley mounts and rings. Buy it so the owner can purchase my .404 Jeffery!

30-06 is ok. Use premium bullets and aim for the right spot. barnes-x will do the job.

No worries. Barnes would be a good choice as would Nosler partitions. I'll betcha a corelokt in the boiler room would work just fine.

Thanks, I got weak for a moment. My 30-06 shoots 180PTs well, but I'm considering the 200 Accubonds. If/when I go I'll take my '06 and 7x57. capt david

I know a guy of slight stature who is quite shy of recoil who has killed about half a dozen eland with a 270 win without incident.

What would I do? I'd use the hunt as an excuse to research and acquire a heavier rifle. The 30-06 will, however, be more than up to the task, with proper bullet selection.

160gr Nosler Accubonds have performed perfectly for me on all medium to large plains game and Leopard. I wouldn't be apprehensive about using their 180gr in your '06.

The 30-06 is totally inadequate for those animals and you would be a fool to try. But if you take me along I will let you use my 375 H&H during the safari on whichever animals you choose.

I know you havn't been there , but don't over think the issue. The 30-06, with a good 180 gr. bullet, will do anything you want on ANY plains game, out to 300 yds. My son made 7 one shot kills, with a single shot rifle, on plains game, in 2008. He used Federal factory ammo, and nosler partition bullets.

Use your 06 with confidence. I have used 30/06 and 180gr Nosler Partition with great success a couple of times on PG. Just seems to be a match made in heaven that 180gr load at 30/06 velocities. My dad has used this load to take a handfull of water buff out here in Oz with well placed shots. A 165gr Barnes x would probably be even more of a good thing if you thought shots would be on the long side.

I used Accubonds in 375H&H last year. They performed worse than .30-06 Winchester Supreme Elite I used a year earlier (Winchester Supreme Elite is pretty much the same bullet design as Barnes TSX; in fact, I suspect that Winchester Supreme Elite ammunition is "inspired" by Barnes TSX). Accubonds would just punch the holes without damaging organs, vanes or tissue, whereas Barnes TSX-like damages organs severely and liquidizes lungs. I shot an eland with .30-06, and it did not go far. Proper shot placement, however, played a role.

So, yes, 30-06 will work. And no, stay away from Accubonds---admittedly accurate, but very little damage (if you want to shoot off some guinea fowl heads, Accubonds are pretty good for that). Good luck!

30.06 in my humble opinion was one of the best medium bore calibers invented. Absolutely take your Eland with this.

I use a .30-06 for almost all my hunting.
Choose a good bullet and put it in the right place. I've taken zebra with it, but not eland. But I wouldn't hesitate using it for one.

Use the saved money for another couple of trophies!

As I suppose you have already gotten the idea that the old 30-06 is up to the task you are asking about! The only warning I would offer is to stay off the massive shoulders of the Eland, and try to get into the lungs with a slight angle behind the shoulder. An Eland has thicker shoulders than a cape buffalo.
From what you say you shoot just about everything with your 30-06, and that alone is a plus in favor of the rifle you own. For those animals I would use nothing lighter than a 180 grain quality bullet. For me personally I would rather have the 9.3X62 for plains game in Africa, and it will do anything the 30-06 will in North America as well. The 30-06 is adequate none the less as long as you do your part, so unless you just want a new rifle, the 06 is fine.

In any event shoot straight, places the bullets where they belong, and enjoy your safari, that’s what it’s all about!
