Will,
I would not want that guy behind me, and the guy has a scope on the rifle, just about useless in a charge. You could see the muzzle blast ripple by the PH's shirt.

That PH is way too young to take! Give him a few more years until he is past breeding age...

Seriously, this was posted by Gander Mountain as an "exciting" hunting video? Looks like the hunter learned safe handling techniques from this professional:

That hunt is also part of the Boddington on Buffalo 2 DVD.

It's hard to tell from the camera angle, but it sure looks like the client's shot missed the PH by damn little.

Saeed,

Sorry, they work for me.

Admittedly camera angles can make things quite deceiving, so how close it really was I don't know.

Personally I don't think I'd want to try that with a scope, but I've never had a buffalo charge. I just can't trust myself to see anything in a scope.

I guess you'll have to buy Bod's DVD!

I have hunted with Mike Payne, stayed at his home, and he has stayed at mine. He has balls of steel, shoots like a laser beam, and can track like a Shona. He's a multi-generation Zim, whose father was killed in the bush wars. He's a hell of a man, and I'd kick the ass of anyone who disrespected him (not that he'd need any help). He stood his ground and laid that double right into the crown of that buff. I know the story and those involved.

N'gagi,
I don't think anyone meant any disrespect to the ph, but was emphasizing how close he appears to have come to becoming an "untimely" trophy himself through no fault of his own.

Will,
I think that the hunter may have moved to the left of the picture when the charge developed and had a more open shot that it appears. But Mike Payne's ears had to have taken a beating.

Question: From Payne's comment, did the buffalo get to him?? If so, I cannot believe the buffalo broke off the attack and trotted off. Kudude

Looks like the hunter was trying to roll out to the left and a clear shot but still, damn close. Be interested to know if anyone has the full video, seems the PH was knocked down, who knows maybe the shot from the hunter actually saved him?

And there is absolutely no need to "kick my ass" as I in no way insulted the PH or hunter horse

I actually thought the PH has some stones of iron there. He stood his ground and you can see, just before the unspoken retreat was called and everyone scattered, he stood in there and did take a sweep from the buff's horns.

Not sure where the greatest danger was - the buff in front of him or the hunter behind him.

That just goes to show why you want a good PH at your side, or in this case, in front of you. He is the only one who stood his ground and took the buffalo while everyone else ran away. I don't see how the client could be simultaneously running away and shooting like he was in the video! That takes some talent. Big Grin It DOES look like he came damn close to shooting his PH in the back. You can see his shirt move from the muzzle blast. I'd be pissed if I was him.

On the other hand, the client got caught being a chicken shit on film as he ran away from a buffalo HE wounded...that seems to even the score a little bit.

Gentlemen,

We might spare a thought for those involved, as it is very difficult for us to make a reasoned judgement sitting at our keyboards.

I have been very lucky, as I have never been in a charge situation.

But, I have been in a few encounters where afterwards everyone involved scratches his head and wonders why he did what he did then.

Scared buffalo!

The above video was as close as we have ever been "charged". The buffalo did not know where we were, neither did we know which direction he was going until quite late.

But, as Walter said "poor buffalo. He had a bullet in him, and was running for his life, and suddenly he comes face to face with two mad men! No wonder he changed directions and ran off to the side!"

Anyway, as soon as I saw the buffalo, my intention was to put a bullet into him as quickly and accurately as possible. It all came about instingtively. I do not remember making an effort to clear Roys head with the rifle before I shot.

We wounded an elephant once, and had to run after it trying to put him down. Roy was ahead of me. Both of us were shooting and loading as fast as we could.

I am sure some of my bullts must have whizzed very close to his head.

He never complained about it, even though I was shooting a 416 Weatherby with a muzzle brake clap

And to save me answering questions later, here is the story of this elephant caper.

We were hunting in Westwood, and found a one tusker at a water hole with another smaller bull.

We did not want to shot him at the water hole, so we parked the truck close by, and waited for the elephants to drink and leave.

This they did, and walked slowly to find a place to rest.

We left Walter in the truck, and went to shoot our one tusker.

They found a shady tree and stood in its shade. This was not very far from the waterhole, but, Walter could not see us.

It took us quite a while to get into a position to get a shot.

The elephant was rocking backwards and forwards as he stood under the tree in their normal manner. Every now and then, he would rock backwarsd enough for a side brain shot.

I know it might be very difficult for some of you to believe this, but those who have known about Walter would certainly do.

Just as the elephant moved clear of the tree trunk, offering a good side brain shot, Walter screamed "OOAAHOOAAHOOAAH" Just like Wisemuller did in the original Tarzan movie!

I fired, and the elephant took off. We ran after him, putting more bullet in.

After we managed to shot him with about 12 rounds, he dropped!

A few minutes later, Walter appears, carrying my 270 Ackley!

Walter "Ah you two are alive! I came to collect the pieces and send them to your families! What happened?"

Me "You cannot imagine how lucky you are! If we had any ammo left we would shoot YOU!"

Walter "Shoot me, why shoot me? Just because you and your friend cannot hit an elephant at 30 meters? I want to know how you two managed to shoot so many shots into that elephant! He must have been very slow, or you and your friend very fast!"

Me "And what is the idea of coming running here armed with a 270, when you know we might have a wounded elephant around?"

Walter "Listen, after 12 shots, I knew even you and your friend can kill an elephant. If he wasn't dead he would be running for his life"

Saeed,

Quite true. It depends upon how you interpret that video. In one interpretation to me the client isn't really that close to dinging the PH. Guess you had to be there!

One has to wonder how many times a PH has to look back over his shoulder to make sure a client in not pointing his rifle at him??? Or keep instructing the client to step along side of the Ph to be able to shoot...
Most importantly cool heads and head down on the gun...
In the video clip both the client and Ph must have hurt the buf for he turned after getting a snoot full of bullets....

It's a tough situation to analyze, particularly since the cameraman unassed the area about when it got interesting.

I don't think it's quite as close to having the PH shot as it looks but it's hard to tell the exact angle. At any rate, the client got off the first shot, and it was aimed, while the PH was a bit slow on his first shot because he was nearly run over by one of his trackers. I also didn't see the client doing anything but moving out of the charge path, just as the PH stepped to one side too. The client got off a shot at the departing buffalo, obviously after the PH must have fired two shots from his double (unless the third shot on the tape is the PHs, in which case he was quite slow with his double), and the client was working his bolt again, as the buffalo left, hardly the sign of panic that some impute to him. Both client and PH missed the brain so, while he may shoot well, I wouldn't put the PHs shooting into the laser category. I'm not disrespecting him, but facts is facts.

Saeed,

You make a good point, but, what does one see through a scope at a 1500 pound black object at 5 paces? And, the PH's shirt was not merely blown by the muzzle blast - there was more of a snap of the fabric. We can leave it to the engineers to calculate the concussion cone from a muzzle blast to estimate the proximity of the bullet passing by the PH, but it sure looked damn close!

The point I was driving at is that this video looks to have out up there by Gander Mountain to shill their hunting videos. While it makes for "exiciting" viewing, it is questionable from a safety and smart shooting point of view. Any company out there promoting hunting should take care to make sure they don't inadvertently send the wrong message or provide ammunition to those who would like to see us turn into herbivoires.

Well you guys all saw a lot of stuff that I didn't! In any case, can we agree that the PH was in front with the client behind and slightly to the left? Is this the correct formation? If so, then clearly the client has NO shot unless the buff approaches from the left. The actions that the client should take in the event of a charge, was not discussed in the video that I saw. Should that not have been a topic of conversation? Are we agreed that the buff did get away (at least in this video sequence)? It wasn't clear to me. One second it was there, then it was gone!
I personaly got tired of seeing the Gander Mtn logo on the back of the shirt!
