A buddy of mine is toying with the idea of getting a suppressor for his rifle. Has anyone had experience in traveling from the States to Zimbabwe via JNB with a suppressor before? I have seen a few on trip report photos before.

I don't think it's a problem traveling with them, but I can assure you that the ph will not appreciate him showing up with one and blowing the ph's ears out when he's standing next to the hunter spotting a shot. And, I think when a ph sees a client with a muzzle brake on a large caliber, they immediately assume the client is recoil shy.

Bwanna:

The question is about suppressors not muzzle brakes. I assume the question is about legality and any travel restrictions. I have seen them in action in RSA by RSA PH's but not in Zim.

I doubt you would be able to take one from the U.S. to Zimbabwe due to NFA and Export Control Act restrictions.

The ATFE and State Department would provide you with an AUTHORITATIVE statement on permissibility of temporary export.

You can't even take it out of your state without written permission from the ATF.

And you will spend five years in jail for having a silencer in Zim...they are classed as weapons of war and are classed with handgrenades and flame throwers in the legislation.

Interestingly, an integral silencer is technically legal- but I would hate to be the test case in a Zim court!

Chris, that is a short barrel and machinegun thing, no such requirement exists for suppressors.

But you can't take your suppressor out of the country. I check. I would have taken one to Namibia if I could have, in a heartbeat.

I have both so maybe I'm confusing the two (SBR and supressor), but I'll take your word for it.
