What scope make and power would you guys reccommend for a CZ 550 american safari magnum in 458lott. I would figure 100 yds would be the longest shot made and was thinking along the lines of a fixed 2 or 2.5 with detachable tally rings. Or will a 1x4 be a better choice

I have several CZ Rifles, and I would like to first steer you toward Mr. Talley's excellent Quick detach rings for that rifle. These are solid mounts that will stand up to recoil and abuse but allow quick removal freeing up the CZ's excellent open sights when needed. That said, I am a bit of an oddity around these parts because I prefer Burris to Leoupold or even Swarovski. I think that for a big caliber rifle that will see hard use the Burris Posi Lock is hard to beat. I have, on my CZ .416 a Signature Safari 1.75 to 5x posi lock with post and crosshair reticle and just bought a set of 30mm rings which I plan to use for a second Burris scope for that same rifle. Leaning toward the Burris Euro Diamond 3-10x44 with German #4 reticle. With this setup I can sight the 1.75-5 for 400GR solids and X bullets, and the Higher magnification scope for 350 triple shocks for use on plains game or to be re-sighted in for 400 grain loads if the 1.75 scope is lost or damaged. Good luck, you will get lots of opinions here, some good information and food for thought!

Tanoose,
I had 2.5x Leupold on my CZ550 in 458 Win. for a while but always wanted a little more. It now wears a 1x-4x Leupold and works well. The 2.5 was a little short and looked that way on the magnum action. I think the 1-4x "fits" better. Just my $0.02 and a 1.5x-5x might even be a little better.

You may want to consider the Leupold 1.75 X 6 VXIII. I like the 6 power at 100 yds, and the eye relief keeps the scars off your eye thumb

I use the Leupold QD mounts although the Talley has a good reputation.

Tanoose: 458 Lott's a pretty tough cookie on scopes. I think the Leupold 2.5X fixed is the safe way to go, however if you want a bit more magnification and low power for up close shots the VXIII 1.5X5 is probably the next in line in terms of durability. A word of caution though, make sure you are very careful when placing the forward ring on the tube. if you do it wrong, you could possible crack the lens. jorge

I have a 2.5x compact leupold on my cz lott and use that scope on my .416 as well although I would be happier with a 1-4 on that.

Thanks guys i have narrowed it down to two. It will be a leupold i just need to decide between the VXIII 1.5X5 20mm or theVXIII 1.75X6 32mm. I am leaning toward the 32mm

I have 2 of the 1.5x5 Leupolds. I went with them just because they fit better on the guns I was mounting them on (Ruger No.1 and Ruger 77- .416). I have noticed that in dim light situations, the small lense of the straight tube seems to leave me wanting more light. I believe I have had to pass on a few trophies due to not enough light that I could have taken with a brighter scope. I assume the bigger lens would be better in this regard, but I could be wrong.
