I've decided that my next shotgun is going to have an "African Motif" as I'm tired of birds and dogs.......anyone care to share any photos they might have...either yours or one you have on file.

I've been surfing the Net and found some but not a lot....any help would be appreciated.

Well, you could take a vacation to London, visit Holland and Holland, and look at their engraving book laying on the counter.

Bill, please, I'm begging you...don't put a bunch of african big game animals on a shotgun. If you don't want birds or dogs on a shotgun, just go with a timeless rose and scroll or some simple gold wire work.

Trust me, it's gonna look funny to have a rhino on a 20 gauge.

Why didn't you say so? Anything goes on a trap gun.

Not a gamebird or dog in sight.

Bill,

You could do African gamebirds: two species of guinea fowl, a number of different francolin, sand grouse, Egyptian or spur wing geese...

You might stretch it to mix in caracal or genet or serval that might be shot with a shotgun (I took a caracal with my Darne 10 gauge), or even a leopard or lion, recalling the now-discredited use of shotguns to follow-up wounded dangerous game...

But, I agree that rhino or elephant on a shotgun is not a winner, just my own 2 cents.
Regards, Tim

I heard an amusing tale some years ago recounted by the late Miss Parker from the Birmingham (england) gunmakers A.J. Parker who were famous for their target rifles and diopter sights for Lee Enfield variant rifles.

When Miss parker was growing up, presumably some time in the 1920'2 or 30's she spent time in her father's gunworks and made the acquaintance of many of the characters in the famous Birmingham guntrade at that time.

Of these characters was an engraver, his surname Drinkwater, although it seems he frequently drank something a little more potent than water.

The story goes that a client of a famous Birmingham gunmakers commissioned a shotgun with game scenes engraving and when he collected it it was resplendent with African big game scenes, the gun was for pheasant and grouse shooting!

The client remonstrated that this was not what he wanted, he wanted winged game engravings, Mr Drinkwater obliged, when the client went to collect he rectified gun he found it had beautiful elephant, hippo and rhio on the respective floorplates and sidelocks, all with wings.

Miss Parker recited that story on many occassions right up to her death around 6 years ago in her 80's.

This does not answer the posters question I know, but I thought it worthy of recounting.

Rather cheeky of Mr. Drinkwater. But it was just what DB Bill has a hankering for, before the wings were added to the elphant and rhino. Big Grin

Maybe a set of .375 H&H Flanged barrels to go with the fouled fowling piece would have smoothed things over, especially if Mr. Drinkwater bought them for the unique shotgun he just bought.

Doesn't drive me bankrupt! Green with envy? Yes!

Please consider Tim Carney's advice again. And again, until you see the value of his advice!

In good hunting.

Stu,

I reconize the M98 on the green backround as a Prechtl. And the bottom one as a Sauer of course. But can you tell us what guns the other engravings belong to?

Erik,

The top six were engraved by Silke Ullrich. I don't have any details of the guns.

You're correct about the Prechtl and Sauer pics. The engraver of the bottom three rifles is Hendrik Frühauf. I've been trying to track down more samples of his work.

Bill - glad to oblige.
