I´ve been reading about the "Remington" double and checked Bajkals homepage and came up with an idea: Could the 45-70 be made to take the .458Lott (or a .450 Rigby etc) in any simple way?

I don´t know if I´d hunt with it but it could be a fun thing to have.

The extractors will probably need major modification or replacement. A real problem I see with taking the Spartan to something much more powerfull is that it only weighs 7 1/2lbs.

First it has to be a rimmed cartridge, with a base at least the size of the 45-70.

If the lock-up design is intended for the .45-70, and it's associated (low) pressures, are you sure you would want to run it at .458 Lott pressures?

I think the dimensions would be all wrong anyway (i.e. rim vs. belt with vastly different tapers).

You are barking up the wrong tree. It would be immpossible to rechamber to a rimless .458 lott or rigby. Not to mention a bad idea to use a high pressure rimless case in a double.

You may very easily be able to rechamber it to a .450NE 3 1/4". That would be alot "cooler" in my opinon.

While it is true that there would have to be vast modifications to handle the rimless case, I don't think the pressure is a issue, as that rifle is available for the .30-06. The '06 operates at more than 2x the pressure of the .45/70 and unless it is a completely different action (unlikely) than it should handle higher pressures than the standard .45/70. An easier conversion would be to something like the .457 magnum as offered by Wild West Guns.

Warning about forces.....and that's what the double works on....not pressure which is one component of force. Just because a double handles a .30-06 at 60,000 PSI don't mean it will handle a .458 Lott at 60,000 PSI. Force is the pressure TIMES the square inches of the internal combustion cavity of the case. For a .30-06 it's about .400 and the force then is about 7,500 pounds. For a .458 Lott at 60,000 PSI and internal combustion cavity of about .44 it's 9,100 pounds. A .470 Nitro at even 40,000 PSI has about 7,800 pounds of force. Further I'd not believe that anyone would design a double that was't capable of firing both barrels simultaneously.

I´m not much of a gunsmith (Big surprise!) and the Lott was just an idea. But a 450 NE would be possible then? Classic cartridge but what would recoil be like in a 7 1/2 lb gun?

No sir, but I bet you could come up with a decent wildcat on the 50/110 case that would loosen your molars...and a 45-110 or 120 would be a cinch but short of your velocity goal I think.

Not necessary. The 45-70 with a COAL of 2.67" would do the same thing without messing with more expensive brass that is only 0.1" longer.

A 45-70 can easily be transformed into a .458 Lott by following these steps:

1. Sell the 45-70.

2. Add $1500 to the proceeeds from your sale of the 45-70.

3. Use the sum from step #2 above to buy a .458 Lott.

Simple.

Your better off buying a big 12 or 10 gauge, from a decent maker and sleeving in 450 NE barrels than opening the back of a 45-70 to 450 NE.

I don't think the old Russkie could take that kind of abuse.

Definatly not 458 Lott that's for sure.

You would probably be better off spending that money on a bolt gun instead of a cheap Ruskie gun like this.

I had a seriuos discussion with my gunsmith today and he talked me out of it. I guess it´s not worth the bother and the day might come when I can afford a real double...
