Four nabbed for illegal hunting in Northern Cape after high-speed police pursuit

THE MULTI-disciplinary Operation Vala Umgodi team in the Namakwa District, consisting of SAPS and SANDF members, arrested four individuals for illegal hunting on Saturday.

Northern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Merapelo Pilane said the team was responding to information about illegal mining activities at a game farm when they spotted a green Mitsubishi Colt bakkie speeding away as the occupants noticed the police approaching.

Members of the Tactical Response Team pursued the vehicle and managed to stop it, finding four occupants inside. A search of the vehicle revealed an impala carcass and three hunting rifles. Further investigation showed that the suspects lacked hunting permits and that the farm owner was unaware of any hunting on his property.

The carcass and hunting rifles were confiscated, and the four suspects, aged between 23 and 53, were arrested for trespassing and illegal hunting. They are scheduled to appear in the Port Nolloth Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
