That's ballsy, I'm certain I would have given him the 500 grainer from the .458 Lott long before he made that many mock charges on me. But, give the guy credit, he had the chutzpah to stand in there and avoid shooting a bull they clearly weren't hunting.

He sure does have teflon coated, stainless steel cajones. I am not sure what the penalties are for having shot an el in that situation ... but I might well have found out!

Generally no penalty - there's usually a game scout with you you can vouch that teh ele was shot in self defense. My PH and I had to wack a cow last year that was coming full steam at 11 yards - not a word from anyone about me paying for it. The council took it and (presumaby) the villagers ate it (we did manage to come up with some filets off it, though)

Here we are with her in the think jess.

That was almost the same situation that happened to me just two months ago and although the Nat parks Scout confirmed that it was a self defence shooting, the council still wanted the T/fees Confused as well as more than their fair share of the meet. Mad

If that PH had tripped over a fallen branch while he was back-pedaling, he would have been killed.

I would not retreat like that. It is too dangerous.

The 2nd time looked like he got pretty close. Interesting video.

I have a comment and a question. First the comment. That elephant was way too close!!!

Now the question. Is that a 'bad elephant' that will display the same aggressiveness towards other humans it encounters or was the charge a result of theat particular situation? Did the PH put humans who encounter it in the future in danger by letting it live?

That PH obviously knew what signs meant "no shoot" and "shoot now." I'da shot on that second rush.

My question is, what behavior does one look for when the damned thing is that close?

If you don't have the elephant DVD by Buzz Charlton then you should get it. It's invaluable for questions of behavior, shot placement, and other issues.

I was surprised he didn't shoot on the 2nd one. He was well within reach and as was said, any mistake on his part would have killed him. Backing up like he did is scary stuff. Then at the end it seems as if he is acting like it's no big deal and not looking back. That may just be the way it was filmed but it looked weird at the end too.

Looked like a bluff (mock) charge to me. The PH obviously was very familiar with elephant behavior and called it right. A less experienced person probably would have killed it unnecessarily. That is why they are called "Proffesional" Hunters and why we are "amateur" hunters.

What surprised me was the scale ie. elephant vs. human! That thing was huge and the guy was pointing his gun at around a 60-70 degree angle!
