Taken free range in Namibia with Divan Labuschagne. Hartebeest were giving us a hell of a time including this loner. Divan did an amazing job tracking him and I made one my best game shots ever taking him on a trot at 200 meters or so. He was headed straight away and I was on him on the sticks when he made a slight turn right giving me hard quartering shot. Got to love a Barnes X.

KevinNY...congrats! That is a great old bull, heavy and broomed. I have one very similar age wise, that I also shot free range in Namibia, but it certainly does not have that spread. Smiler

Thank you. Interestingly, the horn was loose and flopping, so a more recent incident. I'm having the taxidermist mount it at the same angle.

My son's eland was also a bit freaky, he had NO EARS! Great old eland taken on a 3 mile track and stalk. I told my boy, "You don't realize what you've got here. You may never do better."

Good share Kevin,

the red hartebeest probably was the loser in a fight. it probably would have healed at an odd angle had he lived.

As my PH would have said, you have a proper eland and it does not get any better than that. Well done for your son. Only a few hours tracking you say, my old eland was a 2 1/2 days of tracking to take an old proper eland. Mine was aged at 14+ years and both hors were wore down, what did your PH age your son's eland at?

He estimated 12 years old. We were definitely lucky to get on this bull and close on it in 1 day. Sometimes that is just the way it goes. Amazingly he took a a kudu over 56" that afternoon. All free range.

Hopefully a day he will think back to for the rest of his life. He's 15 and I'm really proud of how well he handled himself.

Both of those animals were old and past ready to go.

That bull eland reminds me of Evander Holyfield after he went crossways with Mike Tyson.

Congrats!

I know some people don't like em on a rifle, but most people shoot better with it on there. In this case, a 15 year old shooting a 300 Win Mag. He shoots that rifle better than my plain barreled 35 Whelen. He was also smart enough to not let me refinish the rifle Mark. He said, "You'll just get mad when you scratch it again"

I love hunting Eland.
I think your son's bull is outstanding. I hope he wants to hunt them again. In time I think he will realise how special his trophy is.
Congrats to you both.

I'll need to sit down and do a full hunt report soon. We added 2 days of sightseeing that was a spectacular finish to a great hunt.
