larryshoresHere is my post. I did a shit job of proofing. Sorry!
WOW! I read this an I am amazed. Totally shocked actually. The ignorance expressed by many is simply unbelievable.
I have been to Africa in safari 23 times. I have numbers 24 & 25 planned for later this year and next year. I have seen a lot of good and bad things in that continent in terms of wildlife conservation.
The anti hunter make a massive mistake in a few areas. The first thing is that they apply western thoughts and values to Africa. Nothing could be more wrong. Further, they apply human characteristics to wildlife. Another big mistake.
It is really quite simple. In Africa, the indigenous people ARE going to eat protein. One way or another they are going to eat protein. Most live where there are no grocery stores and no restaurants, not that they would have money to buy at either.
How do they go about getting protein? if left to their own, they set large numbers of snares and gin traps. In addition, they use poison, spears, crude archery and dogs. It is nothing short of incredible what an African can do with a piece of wire. They snare a lot of animals. The problems with this are twofold. First, perhaps 1 out of every 10 animals snares are actually used. Secondly, these animals really suffer in a snare. This is a very inefficient way to feed the masses. However, it is done and done often. In may places bush meat is called Sango.
There is an alternative. The alternative is controlled tourist hunting. Is it better? Absolutely , no doubt. Why? Let me give you a few reasons as follows:
1- Giving the locals jobs reduces the need for poaching.
2-The safari companies do anti-poaching. No one else is. By the way, did you read where the 2 VOLUNTEERS (off duty professional hunters) were killed recently while doing anti-poaching?
3-Giving the meat to the locals further reduces the need to poach.
4- Tourist hunting is far more efficient that the rural African methods. Yes, they kill animals but they kill far fewer than the rural Africans do with their crude methods.
The safari companies do love the wildlife. They are the ONLY group protecting it. Contrary to what many here have said, this is not done only so they can hunt more. Often, species that are not even hunted are protected. A fantastic example are the black rhinos in the Save Valley Conservancy. These are NOT hunted. Massive efforts are made to protect these animals. Expensive efforts. Who is paying for this? Hunters.
I have personally given over $5,000 in the last 30 days to support anti-poaching efforts in Africa. Some of this money is for places I have never been to and never will. I believe in the mission. Meanwhile, the anti-hunting do gooders cannot even raise the money for a statue of Cecil.
I have seen it over and over. Where there is hunting, the wildlife thrives. Where there is no hunting, the indigenous people have killed almost everything.
Look at Kenya. They closed hunting in the 70's. What has happened? They have lost over 70% of their wildlife.
Look, both sides want the same thing. We want wildlife to thrive. I want my grandson to be able to see the same wildlife I have seen. We simply disagree on how to go about.
Having traveled extensively all over the world, i can tell you it is the same worldwide.
I implore you to educate yourself. Some of the comments are so far wrong it is ridiculous. For example, I see a reference to tiger hunting above. There is NO LEGAL TIGER HUNTING ANYWHERE!
Finally, the wrong attitude will be the death of all African wildlife as well as elsewhere.

stradlingI'll tell you what I remember
--- cinnamon teal
I was in the valley right next to Death Valley
I bought a little piece of property
it was 3 40 acre blocks
having a little bit of hydrological expertise
i drilled 3 artesian wells
I took the the d9 Dozer and the big bucket excavator
and I'm built 43 Acres of
Like A Duck Club-- Duck Ponds
when the ponds filled up with water
a pair cinnamon teal came to visit
$364,000 or right at that a duck
and it went down from there
but if anyone had shot or even shot at them
i would have cut his throat with a hacksaw blade
these 20 dollar assholes have not got a clue

Len HawkinsIt is challenging to read most of the anti hunting responses- the majority would probably prefer to see every hunter shot and killed, or they have never stepped foot into the wilderness to experience how much wildlife we have because we hunt. They will never invest their time or resources to converse one animal or a single square foot of wilderness.

The biggest hunting show in Europe will start tomorrow and run for 4 days at Mantes-la-Jolie outside of Paris. How can this initiative take advantage of that?

If you do nothing else in a day, just share some pro hunting posts and you would have contributed to the sustainability of the hunting conservation model.
