I don't know if this has already been posted here or not...

Looks like the FIFA World Cup Soccer tournament will be played in RSA from June 11, 2010 through July 11, 2010. Ticket sales have been impressive and could cause flight problems for those heading to Africa for hunting or other reasons.

If you are wanting to hunt anywhere in Southern Africa during that time, it's probably best to try get your plane reservations done earlier than usual.

As reported in Sports Illustrated:
quote:
93,000 Tickets for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa that have been sold in the U.S., the most of any country as of Sunday.

From the official FIFA 2010 World Cup site:
quote:
The second phase of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa ticket sales has seen, 105,322 Tickets confirmed and approved so far. Due to a high demand for certain Team Specific Ticket Series, these tickets are no longer available for the following countries: England, Brazil, Argentina, Australia, republic of Ireland and Netherlands.

There also been incredible demand for individual match tickets. It is no longer possible within the current sales phase to purchase match tickets for games taking place in Cape Town, Nelspruit and Tshwane/ Pretoria. Individual match tickets for the Opening Match, the two Semi-Finals, and the Final are also currently unavailable. However, it is possible to acquire a ticket for the Opening Match, a Semi-Final and the Final by purchasing a Team Specific Ticket Series - 7 (TST-7). This product is fixed; which means that if the team of your choice is eliminated from the competition, you will follow the victor all the way to the Final Match of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™.

Note: An additional 72,000 ticket requests are currently being processed (confirmations are due at the end of this week). Should any confirmed ticket(-s) not be paid by the applicant, it will be made available to the public again

I would avoid going on SAA at all costs during that time period.

In 1997 my return flight was packed full because of some sports tournament in Texas that the South African team had just won a slot for (may have been rugby). Basically all the tickets were bought at the last minute and in typical African efficiency about half way to the States the plane ran out of everything (food, drink, ice) and half the bathrooms weren't working.

At New York it seems American Airlines had just about double booked the first flight to Dallas. Lots of pissed off South African sports fans that day.

Its been scheduled/planned for a long time now.

I booked for my first safari in SA June 1 - June 10, 2010. My hope is that by heading out when most of the soccer crowd is heading in, I shouldn't have a problem but I am second guessing myself now.

Opinions?

My take, is next year, from convention time, thru May, if there are deals out there, like this year, be very careful about plunking down deposit money, for a hunt, until you have checked out airline availability first.

There's no end of major construction projects and road upgrades etc happening here because of the world cup. I don't know where the money is coming from but it must be costing a fortune.

Hoteliers Turn Down Fifa 2010 Proposal
http://www.thezimbabwestandard.com/

Saturday, 06 June 2009 13:03
THE country's tourism players have rejected as unsustainable a
proposal by the world soccer governing body Fifa to reserve 80% of the rooms
stock in Victoria Falls without immediate payment for next year's World Cup
showcase in South Africa.

Fifa's accommodation agency, Match sent representatives to the country
last month to try and reach a deal on the provision of accommodation.

According to the contract proposed by Match, payment would only
commence with a 10% deposit end of October and 15% by the end of the year.

Match proposed to increase this to 25% by April 30, 2010 and a final
deposit of 50% on June 1.

These amounts would be deposited into an account controlled by Match
to which the tourism players would not have access to.

Tourism players said they were seeking to obtain a reasonable deposit
that can be used for working capital and daily requirements.

"Surrendering 80% of our rooms stock without any form of guarantee is
risky in the event that Match fails to fill up all the reserved rooms," said
Emmanuel Fundira, the Zimbabwe Council for Tourism president.

Fundira said giving out 80% stock of their rooms would mean that the
industry would have no capacity to host teams such as Brazil, England,
Nigeria "that we are trying to woo to our beautiful country".

Fundira said the industry is prepared to offer 300 rooms constituting
20% of the entire room stock in Victoria Falls.

The ZCT boss said the industry was not happy with the cancellation
terms in the contract dictating that after April 10, Match can cancel up to
15% of the rooms reserved without penalty.

But Fundira said the industry is "ready and willing to engage in
further negotiations with Match so we achieve a win-win situation".

The Zimbabwe Tourism Authority accuses players of frustrating Match by
charging exorbitant prices.
ZTA boss Karikoga Kaseke was quoted last week saying some players were
charging rates ranging from US$1 000-US$3 000 a night, a charge the
hospitality industry denies.

Zimbabwe's tourism industry, whose image has been battered for the
past years because of lawlessness and economic meltdown, is picking up the
pieces and is touted to provide the quickest turnaround ahead of sectors
such as agriculture, mining and manufacturing in the new revival plan, Short
Term Emergency Recovery Programme.

Experts say the country will reap from the 2010 Soccer World Cup
showcase in South Africa by providing accommodation to visiting teams.

However, Walter Mzembi, the Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister,
believes without a co-ordinated approach "we may as well forget it (World
Cup) now".

Mzembi directed the industry to work as a sub-committee on the
National Taskforce on Sports, Tourism Image and Communication.
