Just curious, was at a little artsy downtown farmer's market this evening with the wifey and went by a small bookstore. In the section of "Local Authors" there was a book by Peter van Wyk titled 'Burnam' subtitle 'King of Scouts' Baden-Powell's Secret Mentor.

I got it because in what I could glean from the cover and first little caption under a pic he did some work in Africa, was involved in the Matabale (spelling?) war, which I thought I remembered Selous fought in. somebody in my other book I just finished fought in it anyway, they all run together if you get too excited to remember the finer details. Smiler

Just getting ready to start this one tonight and wondered if anybody else had read it.

Thanks Alf! I am anxious to start on it. just waiting till I get off here after a little looking around. the guy is local, about an hour from here. so I should be able to track down the other book as well. the lady that owns the store sounded like she knows him, or at least is very familiar with him. apparently he is a very good editor as well.

there is some posting of classic mausers on big bore forum, got any goodies you want to share pics of??? Big Grin

I see you live in Fresno so you should go to Burnham's grave. It's down near 3-Rivers I don't think it would have been covered by the Lake. I haven't really been there since they built the dam though. Lived for years in Hanford and worked at PPG plant in Fresno. Miss the country. Burnham was very significent in Zim.I believe his daughter was first white woman born in Zim.He had first brick home in Bulawayo. Very interesting life as an Indian scout here in Arizona.

Burnham also wrote a book called Taking Chances forward by Lord Baden-Powell. More stories from Africa and the American West where he had been a Deputy in Tombstone.
