I understand there won't be much of it, but what caliber is it that the PRO will best be able to get for the client;

470 NE maybe 500 NE 3" something else???

I think what ever it is, that will be what I pick for mine!

In Zim, my PH shot a 470. We met another fellow who loaded for and shot a 470 as well. This was the extent of NE ammo I encountered on my trip.

from what I have seen it is all very difficult to find and in most cases has to be special order. Having said that, most of the double rifles I have seen in the hands of PH's were 470 NE.

We're going to be "gifted" with a health care plan we are forced to purchase and fined if we don't, Which purportedly covers at least ten million more people, without adding a single new doctor, but provides for 16,000 new IRS agents, written by a committee whose chairman says he doesn't understand it, passed by a Congress that didn't read it but exempted themselves from it, and signed by a President, with funding administered by a treasury chief who didn't pay his taxes, for which we'll be taxed for four years before any benefits take effect, by a government which has already bankrupted Social Security and Medicare, all to be overseen by a surgeon general who is obese, and financed by a country that's broke!!!!! It's got to be .458winmag. The PHs I met in Moz. had several diff. calibers, .416, .470 & .458. The only "extra" ammo around was .458wm. One of the clients in camp brought in .470NE ammo for his PH. Eeker

Of the nitro express rounds you have the best chance of finding .470 than anything else.

FJ338,

I'll give you the point that .458 win mag or .375 H&H are MOST available, but I am talking "proper rimmed" cartridges.

I am NOT surprised that 470 NE is ahead here.

Let's see if it stays that way.

I have personally met two PH that were using 470NE's and know of a few more with doubles again with 470's , 450/400, 500/465 and 500NE.
All these guys have Ammo availability problems but the 470NE users have the least problems

As far as rimmed carztridges go its;

1) 470 Nitro in big bore

2) 9.3X74R in medium bore.

3) 303 British in small bore

Availability of double rifle ammo in camp may be a factor in choosing a caliber but it would not be a major one for me.

Odds are that your PH will not have either caliber and you will be too far from any to go get it if you ran out of your supply.

Beyond that, even if the PH had or could get some, it would not likely be loaded right for your rifle.

I would think you should choose whatever caliber made sense to you then take plenty of your custom loaded ammo with you.

Into my heart on air that kills
From yon far country blows:
What are those blue remembered hills,
What spires, what farms are those?
That is the land of lost content,
I see it shining plain,
The happy highways where I went
And cannot come again.

I am inclined to "over think' matters a bit. I want a 500 NE at 11.5 lbs or so. Right this second I lean that way, two seconds from now I'll be going to the 470 NE again... Roll Eyes Confused bewildered Big Grin

My life is a disaster!!! rotflmo

Sorry BFJ, missed that rimmed part. I would think .470 has got to be more available. An 11.5# 500NE sounds painfull. CRYBABY

SEARCY shows 11 - 11.5 lbs for 500 NE on his sight under the PRO HUNTER MODEL, 10 - 10.5 lbs for 470 NE.

That's where I got my weight thoughts from.
