From what I understand, the client wounded the buff but was physically unable to follow up. The PH followed the buff and found it . Shot it three times before it hammered him. The trackers managed to get the PH’s rifle while the attack was ongoing. Shot the buff off of him. He had surgery Tuesday I think .

What is the point of going after buffalo if you are incapable of finishing the job??

I have no idea . Perhaps he was sick or injured .

Here is what they posted on Facebook: To all our clients and friends out there we just wanted to keep everyone updated so as to dispel any rumors out there. On the 1st of May Michael was following up on a Buffalo that was wounded the night before. Unfortunately due to physical limitations the client was not able to be present on the follow up for his own safety. Michael came into contact with the bull at close quarters and was able to get 3 shots off before it got to him. The Buffalo of course did what they are known to do and Michael was mauled by the bull. Our trackers Washington and Alfred showed great bravey by leopard crawling up to retrieve the gun. Washington then shot the Buffalo another two more times before it expired. Michael was airlifted to netcare in Polokwane and received medical attention immediately. He sustained two gores to the chest but thankfully nothing major was punctured. He also sustained severe muscular damage to the back of his one thigh. His surgery went well and he is currently in recovery. We all know and love Mike and wish him the best and a smooth and painless recovery. We hope he will soon be back doing what he loves again!

Or perhaps the team felt it safer for the hunter not to participate. Who knows here. The decision was made, and I hope this young man is back at it soon!

If you just got to do it (which I understand), have the PH agree to back-up/fire his own rifle, too. Not your cup of tea, but I bet you have no idea of what being denied something you REALLY want feels like. _______________________

I ALWAYS tell my PHs to shoot anytime they feel it is necessary.

The nice thing about hunting with PH's you know is that they know what to do. I agree, Saeed, I've always wanted PH's to shoot when needed. Fortunately, it's not happened often. But that said, the day I don't feel up to a follow up is the day I hang it up. I wish him well and a rapid recovery.

Is this in South Africa? I have no idea why, but there seems to be quite a few buffalo charges occurring in South Africa on Youtube. Some of them also show the total incompetence of those involved in the videos!

Scroll through the linked post to learn more about why the client didn't participate in the follow up activity. Posted by the client himself. Sounds to me that they both made the right decision. Tom Z NRA Life Member

There might be several reasons for the client not participating! I have been asked to sit back by a new PH I hunted with. I refused and went along. Buffalo was dead anyway. It would be interesting to know the reason.

It would be interesting to know what caliber the PH was using and to get 3 shots in at close range is a feat in its self ROYAL KAFUE LTD Email - kafueroyal@gmail.com Tel/Whatsapp (00260) 975315144 Instagram - kafueroyal

That is interesting. I would have never thought of that as a reason to not follow . Seems valid to me .

I suppose that the "why's and how's" can be cussed and discussed ad nauseum. All I know for sure is that there is a man in hospital who was injured doing his job...likely a job that he loves. He has my prayers for a full and complete recovery. DRSS "I always take care to fire into the nearest hillside and, lacking that, into darkness." - the late Dr. Hunter S. Thompson

No matter what, hope he recovers and back to his job Shit happened all the time while hunting, some hunters have not experience so they can only get in the way so it’s safer to let Ph do his job without worrying getting shot by nervous client Anyway, there is reason for high price for hunts of DG in Africa

Maybe the range was not as close as it should've been for the first shot (the one that counts most) let alone the other 2.

Hopefully he'll be back in the field soon. I hunted Buffalo in Zimbabwe in 2011 with Pierre Hundermark as my ph. As we were on the 7 hour drive from Bulawayo to the concession, I told him that I had had 7 knee surgeries and that I couldn't run. I could walk all day, but running was physically impossible for me. Pierre just looked at me and said "If necessary, we'll just have to stand there and shoot." I think we all wish him well, and a quick recovery. Point is hunting does involve some dangers. And I think despite all precautions, sometimes things do go south due to circumstances beyond anyone's control. The results could have been just the same even if the client was present. Still, no reason was given for him not to participate to end an event he started.

Saeed, I believe that the hunter has signifiant hearing loss. The hunter was an older man and has some mobility issues and the decision for him was made for his safety. >>>>>>>>>>>>>> "You've got the strongest hand in the world. That's right. Your hand. Wish him the best. Saeed, Like you, I was asked to stay behind once on a leopard. I didn't either. And I won't
