Anyone have any ideas on where to find ammunition for a .416 Rem. Mag.? Every one of my usual go-tos seems to be out of stock on everything except Noslers or 450 grain bullets. I like Swift A frames for buffalo, like 400 grain so I can reach out and have never tried 450 grains.

I've shot buffalo with Noslers but I don't like them for frontal or hard quartering to shots, which is my favorite shot. So I could live with them, and they'd be fine for lion, but it would crimp my style on buffalo.

Any tips on available ammo would be appreciated.

I need to do an inventory of what ammo I have, but I always think I need more. No one ever died because they had too much ammo.

Thanks.

For what it is worth the 416 Partition has got a small front core and penetrates deeply. More than 80% weight retention in my few recovered samples.
Last buffalo was quartering away with complete penetration.

Have your ammo custom loaded. As was mentioned just above, Superior is a popular custom loading company.

I have a local gunsmith custom load all my ammunition. I supply the cases and bullets, sometimes powder and/or primers and he loads excellent ammunition for me. He loads for a couple hundred people, is quick and very reasonably priced. I expect you’d find someone similar near you.

Regarding 400 grain Swift A frames, I suggest you call them directly. I just bought some from them at SCI, as well as some 300 grain 375s. They told me they’re producing as fast as possible but can barely keep up with what major ammo manufacturers are ordering, so best to buy direct.

If you feel Nosler's can't penetrate, I find that to be a conflict of opinions, but to each his own, I can only go with my opine. However I would suggest you use Barnes TTX as its available from Barnes direct as a rule...NOrth Forks are a great bullet, but if I was taking angle shots I would use "cup points" or woodleigh 450 gr. PPs.

Swift is a good bullet but no better than a Nosler or North Fork..If you want to break shoulders Id suggest a solid or cup point..I have broke both shoulders on buffalo with the 450 gr. PP woodleigh and with the new Nosler 400 gr. bullet with the partition that has been moved forward..

No argument here, just conversation and a opposite view..

You might also try John LaSala at Safari Arms Ltd. He has loaded various calibers of ammo for me in the past. He lives in New York state.

Have you tried looking here.

They have a lot of different business that have the 400 gr bullets.

https://ammoseek.com/ammo/416-remington-magnum

I have ordered from a few of the business and i have had no complaints. It is easier that driving down to the local Cabelas or sportsman warehouse

If you have to have it you have to pay the going rate but $10 a round Confused 3-4 boxes of that stuff would finances a nice reloading set up.

As mentioned above, you can order the AFrames as loaded ammo from Swift, but I’m not sure how quickly you will get it. I have ordered .416 Remington ammo from them (no cases to be found at the time) and I got it within 4 months.

Federal just started their custom ammo program, so they might be a shot, pun intended (also as noted above).

Thank you gentlemen, I always knew I could count on the AR community. Found what I needed and ammo is on it's way.

Ray, I agree with you on Noslers. I love them. I just don't like them on buffalo.

As to the Barnes, I know there are a lot of folks that love them, but I had a 400 grain Barnes deviate severely in a large whitetail. Wasn't a problem, the deer died, but it got me thinking about what would have happened if it had been a buffalo. So I won't use them.

I realize those are very small sample sizes and not predictive of other results.

But I'll stick with Woodleigh's if I can get them, or Swift A Frames on buffalo. I've never had one fail.

Thanks again guys, you were a lifesaver!

I recently purchased hard-to-find ammo from Federal Custom. Expensive but they had just what I wanted—-Woodleigh solids and Swift A-Frame, when no one else offered them.

Thanks, Saeed. I'd take you up on it, but solved the problem. I've got a lot of .416 ammo, mixed rounds I wouldn't hunt with and leftovers from prior hunts. Which is good for practice and such, but I like to hunt with the same ammo and same lots. Found what I needed thanks to the guys on this forum and straightened it out with the credit card company, so I'm good. Thanks again to everyone.

From reading your previous posts, would I be correct in saying your experience with Nosler Partitions has been very positive ? Your only problems you have experienced or heard of were from excessive velocity. More velocity can lead to blowing the nose off and losing too much weight. This might cause too little penetration and some believe it is a failure. Not really a bullet failure so much as a handloading error ?

Thanks Ray,
brair

Funny this.

For so many years, I have used 85 grains of H4350 with 300 Barnes X.

When I made my own bullets.

Same load with 300 Walterhogs.

Neither ever failed.

many of us use them for everything from duikers to elephants!

Good morning …

Maybe you could put a 2 step process on your credit card.

I used to have my credit card number borrowed, many times. With the 2 step verification process That has stopped.

When ordering i receive a text message to input a 6 digit number to complete the order.

Also, i have set up that i receive a text message, when ever my credit card is used. So my handi dandy Apple Watch will buzz on my wrist when this message comes across.

The last time, someone tried to use my credit card, i had just left a gas station on !-40 and was about 6 miles down the road when my card was being asked the security code to complete the order. I was able to call my credit card company while driving west to make sure that the order was not completed.

Much appreciated, but not a big Barnes fan.
Shot a big bodied whitetail cull buck in south Texas, biggest whitetail I've ever shot body sized, and I intentionally shot behind the shoulder to avoid meat damage. Animal was dead broadside at 110 yards. Shot was perfect off sitting sticks. Entrance at point of aim, behind the shoulder. Heard the ricochet and exit was out of the top of the off shoulder fully six inches to the right of point of impact. Not impressed,
I won't shoot a buffalo with those bullets.

I have shot 6 cape buff, 5 kudu, 4 eland and several elk with TSX. Never had an issue. I have not shot any whitetails or pronghorns with them but have had a lot of trouble ( fragmentation and lack of penetration) with Bergers...

I've never had a bullet failure with a 416 Rem or 404 with any bullet on a buffalo or anything else, I've been thinking those issures were a thing of the past with modern bullets using a partition or a bonded core..I realize it could happen on a spine shot Eland or Buffalo as that massive bone structure tears bullets all to hell, but puts any animal down for good or kills 99,9% of the time.

Note: Ive observed and actually made that happen to myself and that is using too light a bullet in a Nosler or any other bullet..I listened to a well known gun scribe who said the TSX was a great elk bullet in 150 gr wt. after two elk tracking jobs I went to the 180 and never had another problem, a huge cow elk took a Nosler 130 gr 270 broadside lung shot and ran half a mile before going down. The 150 Nosler has never failed me in the US or Africa. Moral of this is use the correct bullet weight for the game hunted regardless of brand. I can remember when most bullets failed from time to time, The bullet makers of today have listened and given us the best ever..

As to Tsx Barnes or any monolithic I suspect a one can drop down a bit such as a 130 gr 308 as opposed to a 150 for deer, or 150 as opposed to a 165 in your 06, if you must..

I, however have run tests in several calibers pitting Barnes X bullets to Noslers and ended in every case too close to call, same results on large game. Plus had 4 failures with Barnes and one with Noslers over the years, but would not condem either bullets..just is what it is.

Either are good on plains game. I don't like either on buffalo. You can make them work but neither are ideal. IMHO.
