MAU MAULong time tracker of Andy Hunter killed by Elephant.
I received a sad message yesterday from Andy Hunter with whom I hunted with last September in Chewore North.
His long time tracker and friend, Mendas, was killed by a Bull Elephant in the field next to his home this week.
Mendas was trying to scare off five elephants that were destroying his small cotton crop, when a Bull Elephant charged and killed him instantly.
Mendas was an outstanding tracker and a fine provider for his family. I was fortunate to have been invited to his home in rural Zimbabwe this past September and I will always remember his warm hospitality and friendship.
Mendas will be missed by many and I wish him Godspeed.
Mendas is on the right with the green cap.

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......
"If you're being chased by a Lion, you don't have to be faster than the Lion, you just have to be faster than the person next to you."

dakota45056A sad event! Didn't hunt with Andy out of the Big Five Camp in July, but with Buzz. But did spend some time with Andy and got to know his trackers as 3-4 PH's were sharing the same Chewore North camp.
When even a passing meeting with someone occurs, it brings some of the hidden dangers of elephant hunting into more realism. Carry a big rifle and be prepared.

BearHunter 62Its a sad thing even though everyone who ventures into that kind of work knows the risk. It wouldn't be DG if it didn't happen. May god comfort his family and friends.
