I have read that it�s a few people in USA that have built a 500 NE in a Ruger no1. Most people said that a 458 Lott in a ruger no1 is a beast to shoot and kick very badly. 500 NE must be even worse to shoot in that rifle. Is it possible to shoot 500 NE in a Ruger no1 without to get hurt of it?

i was at the range a few months ago and a guy showed up with a #1 that had been rebarreled to 500 NE. i just had to try it. yes, it hurt!! it even had a mercury recoil suppressor in it. i shot it once and could have handled another shot or two, but i would have had a wicked headache for the rest of the day and generally felt like a horse had kicked me in the head about 5 times. it was interesting...but not fun. cheers...bud

Do you know the weight of that rifle? I think it�s possible to shoot with that caliber in ruger no1, but I don�t think that I would like to shoot more than once with it. It�s nice to have a rifle in that caliber offcourse.

sorry, i don't know what the rifle weighed but i would guess about 9 or 10 lbs. about another 4 inches of barrel and another 2 lbs would have been useful. cheers...bud

That gun should weigh at least 13 lbs. in my opinnion and it will still kick the bejesus out of you, that is a fact of life with the 458 Lott and up.....muzzle brakes help, weight helps, I suppose that Mercury gadgit in the butt that ruins the balance of any rifle helps recoil, but those guns still kick, you cannot escape that fact, your might learn to live with it, most don;t, many think they can, a precious few can get away with it!!

I think it is a great rifle.

The rifle owned by 500nitro certainly doesn't weigh 13 pounds (more like half that) and I have shot it and seen him shoot it under demanding condtions. It is completely controllable as long as you don't try to fire it while sitting on a buffalo skull at 3:00 am after a long walk through the bush. It is a beautiful rifle and a joy to carry on long walks through the thorns chasing bity, stompy, scratchy critters.

We have taken a stock Ruger #1 in 458 Winchester Magnum, and re-chmabered it for the 460 Weatherby Magnum.

I have fired over 100 rounds through it - it is not harder to shoot well or control than any other big bore rifle.

I have a 458 Win built on a mauser 98. That rifle has a weight of 8.3 pounds and I have shoot 40 rounds of 500 grains at 2100 fps on one day with that without any problems. I also have a Pedersoli sharps in caliber 45-70 that I have decided to rechamber to 45-100 or 45-110. I have two ruger no1 in caliber 243 win and I plan to build a 45-70 or 45-100 on one of them. The other one it�s more difficult to choose caliber on, but I think it would be fun to have a rifle in caliber 500 NE in it. I have sex reamers to choose on: 45-90 WCF, 45-100 WCF, 45-110 Sharps, 470 NE, 500 NE and 458 Lott. I think that it would be more fun to have a 500 NE than a 470 NE. I have allready built a 458 Lott on a Sako Hunter rifle with a weight of 10.5 pounds.
