I have, as of late, been totally turned off by the "whack and stack" and "me and Joe went huntin' in Africa and want to write it off so did a DVD" type of African hunting videos out there right now. Of the recent purchases I have made, Buzz's "Hunting the African Elephant" was the best by far. I rate it excellent in narrative and instruction. The rest are amateurish at best, do a deep disservice to hunters at the worst.

Buzz's new DVD was good, hard to repeat earlier success and expectations, and the Boddington DVDs are ok but they recycle scenes fron previous videos and Tracks Across Africa programs that make me ask myself "haven't I seen this before?". May make them longer but does it add value?

I got an e-mail from Safari Press strongly endorsing "Mountain Buffalo" by Rainer Josch. Well, well, self serving promotion, I thought but I ordered anyway... only $29.95, a bargain today.

I got it yesterday, watched it last night and will enthusiastically say this is one of the best "hunting" films about buffalo and true wilderness hunting I have ever seen! This is almost a documentary... fantastic narration, beautiful scenery and true hunting. Only 4 buff are shot, it's thick, you won't see charges provoked or slo-mo's of blood and gore flying ala Sullivan. What you will see is a part of Tanzania few of us will ever get to hunt, huge buffalo that don't always end up on the ground and at the end... the greatest explanation of why we hunt I've heard to-date. Or at least, why most of us hunt. This is a DVD for the true hunter and reminds me of "In the Blood", the documentary about the Roosevelt grandson's safari. Only 61 minutes long, it tells the story it needs to and leaves you wanting more.

Check it out!

I must have that DVD. The first time that I hunted in Africa was at the Klipspringer lodge, Nelspruit, South Africa
The lodge owner was Jürgen Jösch, Rainers 75 year old father. Jürgen learned me a lot about hunting Africa, and I think that one can claim that Jürgen is 'The man' among German speaking hunters, just what Harry Selby is for the English speaken hunters.

Jörgen has written a book called 'Tropäen fieber'.

Jurgen has sold the lodge now..... I think because his wife was ill. - I'm not sure where he went - but I get an idea he went back to Germany.

I haven't seen the video, but I assume it was made in Reiner's area in Masailand? - Mto wa Mbu is next door and currently suffering badly from the charcoal burners etc....... but he'll be OK up there as no other bugger would be silly enough to climb those bloody mountains!

Losimingori Mountain where Rainer has produced his Moutain Buffalo DVD is part of Intercons Mto Wa Mbu Consession. Several different ``Freelance PH`` hunt there but only a few are able to hunt this step mountain...

My only criticism of the DVD is that it is not long enough; I wanted more.

Highly recommended.

MBB,

I know it's technically part of Mto Wa Mbu and technically anyone who hunts that area can also hunt the mountains..... realistically, it's not really possible unless the entire hunt is based on the mountain.

The licence for hunting Mto Wa Mbu says simply that and that named area encompasses the entire area, including the mountains.......... Problem is that it's such a massive area.

Yes, that is a highly enjoyable video/DVD. We talked about it here just a few months back.

If you like good buff DVDs, make sure you check out this one as well (unless you already know it). It probably has the best/most professional footage of buff hunts I have seen. It is miles ahead of the footage in the Boddington videos (which are also not bad in their own right):

http://www.huntersvideo.dk/index.php?partnerid=&lang=UK&pt=videos&video_id=3

This, btw, was also filmed with Rainer Jösch as a PH. It was a different production and film crew, though. And the footage was shot in more open terrain. Both DVDs belong in every "collection".

Rainer also did one I believe titled Masailand 1&2. were he hunts on Mount Galai in the Natron concession. Challeging hunting there at very close quarters and a unique expereince in the high rain forest.

I ordered mine, and got a note that the mail service machines ate it! I'll have to reorder it with your endorsement. Thanks.

It is outstanding. I have watched it a couple of times and would love to take a crack at that type of hunting buff.

That is an old video but that buffalo coming out of the mud has to be the most beautiful buffalo I've ever seen.

Thanks for the review Russell.

I also generally dislike, not to say detest, the run of the mill, whack 'em and stack 'em, bloodfest, chest-pounding type of African hunting video - which is all that seems available on the market.

Sullivan, Watts, etc., etc. Life is too short to waste it watching that stuff (and stuff is a deliberately charitable word choice in this instance).

I have just ordered this one and Buzz Charlton's first, and I am looking forward to watching both of them.

Mrlexma,
You will like them both. I especially liked the mountain buff dvd. It is outstanding. I ordered my very last Jack Brittenham DVD last year - what a disaster, almost as bad as Mark Sullivan.

I like Rainer's DVD and have recommended it to others. It's an interesting method of hunting and much more to my personal liking than hunting with vehicles.

Based on the comments here on AR I ordered the DVD and found it to be of highest quality in both content and footage. It is more of a nature documentary (and I mean that in a positive way) then a hunting video.

I really think he captures his own personal definition of what hunting is, and what he hopes it should be for other. Only regret was that it was only an hour long.

What's really interesting is that Josch and Kai-Uwe Denker have tried to put a hunting video together. I hope it works out.

Other than ordering from Europe, does anyone know where I can obtain Josch's other DVD's? Safari Press and Outdoor Visions do not list them.

I saw them somewhere but can't recall where. You might try contacting Rainer at his website...
http://www.rainerjosch.com/

He's probably hunting but he's an interesting guy to visit with and good about answering emails when he's around.

If you saw that then you also saw how thick the cover was. If you hunt with Josch then you know the expectations and probable outcomes. I would be honored to hunt with him up on that mountain. I hope those elephant on that mountain continue to increase and become available someday.
