Mich, I was under the impression that a lot of PH's hunting in Tanzania (even Botswana) were actually South Africans. Do they have to have a "local" partner to conduct operations in Tanz? Any idea which companies are owned, run, PH'd by Tanzanians and vice versa?

I was a fraid of that! In tz there are numerous unregistered outfitters that operate in this way and the fact that just about anyone - and I mean anyone - can obtain a PH license here makes the whole operation quite simple! The majority of these are SA outfitters/ph's that in effect "sublease" blocks (something illegal) from a Tz registered outfitter. The way they circumnavigate the "illegal" subleasing is that the TZ company licenses the PH from the SA outfitter as one of thier own and all monetary transactions are done overseas. Unfortunately, TPHA are a very weak lobbying association and most of the board members are ph/outfitters themselves (and some are involved!)with little time to push the matter forward. Quite disheartening for the smaller hard working outfitters that struggle to make the minimum required performance to ensure they keep their concessions. I suppose the quickest way to stop or make it difficult for OOA and others is by "spreading the word" at every opportunity such as on this forum. Hopefully people will take heed.....
