nice shooting tex ......a question tho with the buff staying where he was why didn't you try and get closer after the first few shots to finish him off would have been easyer than flinging shots from whey back there.

im not trying to piss you off just curiouse.

Yeah, why didn't you get closer after the first shot and then at 20 yards from him say into the camera, "Now he can decide how he wants to die". Wink jumping

Oh, that's right, that's been done a few times on camera before. Big Grin

Seriously, they are tough aren't they. Good show, nice buff.

Whooa!

I see that the message part got deleted somehow. Not me. I got the clip from Huntingfootage.com

I kinda wanted to know everyones opinion? I am not experienced with buffalo, but seems like this could have taken place differently. Your thoughts?

That 450 Dakota was knocking the hell out of him!

Last weekend we touched off a 375 H&H, 458 Win Mag, 460 Weatherby, and a 505 Gibbs. To me the 375 H&H was no more than my 338 Win Mag, and it was one of the Rem M/700 custom shop rifles geared for light weight. The 460 sucked hard! The Gibbs has a wonderful sound, and unique recoil compared to the rifles I have shot in my life. Ammo is expensive......I need one!

If the 450 Dakota is like the 460 Weatherby, then screw that....I do not see why you need that recoil when the other calibers out there are easier on the shooter. Again, this guy looks like he is getting his ass kicked. Watch his shoulder from the rear when he fires. It looks like it broke.

I saw no flinch. What I saw was recoil. It does tend to have an effect in a big bore, especially when shot from prone.

As to whether it could have gone differently, well, that video should make it clear how much damage a buff can absorb before going down and dying. They don't just whimper, fall and give up the ghost, you know.

Also, that is a very dead buff at the end, so I didn't see anything that I would have wanted to go differently in any case.

Is this Wendell? I thought he posted a while ago a clip of himself taking a first shot at a buffalo from the prone position.

If I took a prone shot with a 450 Dakota, I'd be in shock for about 20 min.

I shoot a .450 Dakota and I can tell you shooting from a bench is no picnic. But I sure as heck would not want to shoot prone with it.

Yep, It's me.

Yep, my shoulder hurt for a few days.

Video doesn't show it well, but there was no way to get any closer. We litterally crawled on our bellies for 100 yards to get to where we were. The shot was 110 yds. and I knew that first shot was going to be a whopper, laying prone.

I put the gun on the outside of my shoulder, instead of more in, where, I am sure, it would have bgroken my collarbone in that position.

I forgot I shot that many times. I think there were 5 holes in the Buffalo. I know I missed once.

The first shot probably would have done the trick as he never went more than 15-20 yards from where he started.

Ouch. What MRLEXMA says about covers it regarding buffalo. Now I don't feel so bad that I "only" had to put two in my buff from my 416 to put him down, plus a third "coup de grace!" jorge

Wendel - Great footage. By the way, who is the IDIOT "aussiehunter" on the huntingfootage website? That guy clearly knows nothing about buffalo hunting or dangerous game in general.
