I have some elephant hide and zebra skin that I'd like to get some rifle scabbards made from. Would welcome any suggestions as to custom makers.

A bit off the track of African hunting, but should be of interest since we sometimes end up with the hides as trophies and are looking for something interesting to do with them.

Thanks!

I have had quite a number of gun cases for rifles from elephant and buffalo skins that I have shot.

Mine were done at the taxidermist, both in Zimbabwe and South Africa.

Trouble is I have very few of them left.

Everyone loves them, so I end up giving them away. Thinking I can always get some next year.

Check with www.murrayleather.com and see if he can/will do it.

Thanks, I talked to Dick Murray yesterday. Didn't realize he would do custom work with your skin. Fine gentleman.

Bought some 470 shell holders from him two years ago - top quality stuff.

Tomorrow he'll have some elephant hide panels on the way to him!

I'm curious if you would share the cost of this with us, please? I had one made (a zippered case) out of elephant, not mine, for $400 in RSA, but keep in mind, I did not supply the hide. It's a lovely case, so much so that I basically never use it, as I don't want to ding it up. I sometimes wonder why I got it if I won't use it. Do you mean for use on a horse when you say scabbard, or a case as I mentioned?

I'm having a zippered soft case done with my buff backskin by Life-Form. As I recall the price seemed pretty reasonable at the time although my trophies haven't showed up yet and I haven't received the final bill. I'll keep you posted and you'd better beleive I'll use it.

Talked to Dick Murray today and ordered a soft case for my rifle and a slip case (really pretty neat) for my double rifle. Also some shell holders. All from elephant hide - mine !!

Very responsive and the shell holders I bought from him 2 years ago are really quality work. His price for these items is the same as if he furnished the leather. Seems fair to me since the elephant hide is a bit harder to work with and it is a custom job after all. Based on his quality and turnaround time, I certainly have no complaints.

They will be going to Africa in late August. Hope they get some blood on them.
