Recommendatios for a sling for a big rifle

I use a wide canvas and leather with rubber threads in it that keep it from slipping on the shoulder. Look like the old time English slings. I got mine from Cabelas but they don't show them any more. One similar to it but with leather buckles instead of brass studs is available from Jeff's Outfitters. Rather pricey at $39.

Another vote for the Butler Creek slings.

I started with one many years ago and after the first safari with it I started changing all my rifle slings to the Butler Creek. They really make carrying a heavy rifle for hours on end seem less burdensome. I use the Alaskan model with the four cartridge loops, which I load upside down, and am proficient at reloading from it when things are in hurry-up mode. It cannot be used effectively as a hasty sling, but on rifles with a barrel band front swivel that's a moot point anyway.

I now have a drawer full of quality leather Cobra slings that don't get used.

I have the Vero Vellini neoprene slings similar to the Butler Creek slings. The stretching and bounce of the neoprene slings really takes the shock out of hauling a heavy rifle around. While not as classic looking looking as some, it is very practical. And the more I hunt, the more I like practical.

I do also have the canvas and leather sling mentioned above. Can't recall where I got it. Probably Cabelas. I do like it and it is very comfortable as well.

If your going to use the sling to assist in carrying your rifle only the Vero Vellini is excelent. I don't know that it would be great as a shooting aid. I had just avoided slings up until my Derby Eland hunt where we tracked up to 8.5 hours per day. The Vellini sling was excellent and I never felt the rifle's weight was dragging me down.

I'm in the market for a sling and I must have looked at evrything on the market. For a heavy rifle, I really like the "Trader Keiths" leather and webbibg model. My son used it on our hunt in 2010 and had no complaints.

For myself, I think I'm going to go with "Montana" quick adjustable leather sling.

I want something I can use to carry the muzzle down if the bush gets really thick. Too many of the "hi-tech" slings I've seen have a thin bit on the butt end which will make that impossible.

I carry muzzle down-just turn the sling around it also make it easier to use as a hasty sling.

There is a solid rubber sling made by a guy in MI, whos name and brand escape me currently but of all slings I've owned, and I have a closet full, none compare with his. I have six and have bought many for friends. At one time he sold them via TV, but now I only see his salesmen at outdoor shows (Deer classics/NWTF Convention etc). They are around $22 with a lifetime warranty and they make a magnum model for heavy guns. You can position them in a variety of ways and when on your shoulder, they stay put! They absorb the shock weight of the gun while walking and you can fix them into the backpack position if you need to belly crawl. They also stretch to give your arm stability when shooting offhand. As I said, I have many slings, made of multiple materials but nothing comes close to this guys sling.

Go to levysleather.com and take a look at the S8C Model. I have these in stock and they are very affordable. They most closely resemble an African sling of the past with 2" cotton webbing with leather ends and tri-glide adjustment. I would also consider the SN72 in Veg-Tanned leather if you want an all leather sling. These are the best all leather slings I have seen. PM me if you need more info.

I found the perfect sling for my big gun - it's the Texashuntco nylon sling that has a built-in portion of eleastic inside the sling that makes the heavy rifle seem lighter. Also, it is REALLY durable & tough. Thanks for your input, & after trying a Texashuntco product, I think I'll be using some of their other products.
