LionHunterClearly these clients weren't ready to conduct a DG hunt and lacked a plan for dealing with worst case scenarios. I always discuss a course of action for critical incidents with my partners and PH the first night in camp. Having a plan to shoot a DG animal off of someone should always be discussed. I believe one must run in and place the barrel against the vitals before pulling the trigger. You don't want to shoot the person you're trying to save.
As to the knife, I was once asked by a PH why all American hunters carry such big knives. I explained to him that when we hunt in the U.S. we are most often in very remote areas and a good sheath knife is a survival tool as much as it is a weapon. I always carry a large fixed blade knife anywhere I hunt.

L. David KeithMust be the one posted on the OSS knife page. What a cluster @#!%$ I've seen it recently and talk about clients who weren't ready to hunt dangerous game. I'd hate to find myself in a fix with those two. One stood there frozen and wouldn't release his rifle into the sons hands. The other was looking for the camera so he could film a man getting killed by a buffalo. I would never want to be around those guys. I can just imagine the big tale I'd hear. Seeing is believing.

The client with the 375 H&H ought to stick with rabbit hunting methinks.

Ackley Improved UserI believe this was the PH's fault - he let things get too crowded and people began getting in the way of each other and he couldn't do his job like he needed to. I bet he conducts things differently now. I would have spined the buffalo at point blank range, but a PH should not count on a client to do that. AIU

FridayAmazing and frightening story. The first question that came to my mind was "why didn't the son have a rifle with him if he was tracking a wounded buff? Regardless of the answer, the son did the right thing under the circumstnces. That's one video I hope my wife never sees, or she might not let me go after anything again, even ducks!

RBladeWild. It's amazing the PH was not killed. Just goest to prove that we can never assume anything. Good thing his son had a "plan B".

Gotta believe that the combination of 3 hits from a 375 and 4 from a 470 had more to do with the buff's death than 3 stabs with a knife.

Tom In TennesseeI think it relates to John Greeff's leopard mauling....the son in this case went in with his knife to save his father, Greeff tackled the leopard to get it off his step son....they probably never even had any doubts about what to do.....unlike most of us in our comfy Monday morning quarteback chairs.....go squirrel hunting...

Ackley Improved UserYou can't blame the clients for this debacle. The only mistake they made was hiring a near moron PH.
The PH IS RESPONSIBLE to make sure things go well. The PH totally mismanaged this situation and almost paid with his life.
He let things get WAY TOO CROWDED. People were falling all over each other and his sons were not equipped properly. A PH should never rely on the clients to get him out of trouble. In fact, if I were the RSA authorities, I would consider sanctioning this PH and either sending him back to PH school or even taking his license away. Except for his final sacrifice to save the client, his performance was damn near blantant incompetence.
By the way, I seriously doubt this buffalo died from knife wounds. He was ready to go from multiple gun shot wounds, which finally had their effect.
