Hi All,

Just returned from a 7 day hunt at Big 5. My PH was Mitch Bunce who I nicknamed 15 minute Bunce as we shot everything within 15 min of leaving the truck or boat! Better to be lucky than good!

Mitch is very good and works hard to get your trophies. I saw his determination when he recovered the croc from the Zambezi, 5 hours after it was shot. It managed to slip in despite a perfect brain shot and a backup through the neck as well.

ADVICE: DO NOT shoot a croc if it is very close to, especially facing the water lying on a steep bank!

I Shot:

Day 1 - Ele cow
Day 2 - Baiting for croc
Day 3 - Bushbuck (13") and croc (12')
Day 4 - Buff cow and Zebra
Day 5 - Kudu (57")
Day 6 - Looking for Hippo
Day 7 - Bull Hippo

Guns used:

404 Jeffery - Mauser Oberndorf with Woodleigh Hand loads on the ele
375 H&H - Sako Safari grade with Norma FLs and A frame bullets on everything else.

No problems at all faced in SA and Zim. Except SAA was on strike, which screwed up travel plans somewhat! Used Optima Handling in Joburg to get the gun permits in SA - they are very good. Let me know if anyone needs their tel # or email add.

For Zim I advise carrying some cash, the reserve bank refused to xchange US$ travellers checks as they said I did not have a receipt! Just an excuse. They all want US dollar notes.

Weather: Was getting hot in the valley. A light pullover if that was required.

Fishing: Caught some Tiger fish, biggest was 12lb.

Other Game seen: Impala, wild dog, waterbuck, bush pig, warthog. 45lb tusker - biggest ele seen.

Shared camp with PHs: Ian Gibson, Dirk, Buzz and Shaun.

The 57" Kudu

Cow Buff - 130 yards lung shot, went 40 yards and sat down - needed a finishing shot.

Hippo - Brain shot at 60 yards while it was in the water. At the shot it turned upside down kicking all his legs in the air. It was in shallow water so did not sink.

I had a chance to shoot one at 20 yards on land but passed up as it was a smallish bull and fast asleep, we had to throw stones to wake it up!! It got up and ambled into the water, it was badly ripped up from fighting with other Hippos I guess!

My 404 with the Elephant - 2 shoulder shots at 20 yards did the trick.

My 404, Mitch's 458 Win and the scouts AK!

The skinners get to work!

Recovering the Croc - we were lucky!

You can see the exit hole of the 2nd shot below the smile. The shot was from the opposite side through the neck. The first shot was in the brain - it was an akward angle, but did the job.

The croc managed to thrash his tail and slipped into the water though!

Bushbuck

Zebra - 250 yards in the chest. It ran about 500 yards and needed a finishing shot. We had to push it as it was getting dark and just caught it in time!

Great pics and a great hunt! Everyone says only good things about Big 5.

By the way, why does that one rifle have the bolt on the wrong side?

Wow,

Great trip with some great trophies. Good job on recovering that croc.

I have hunted with Big 5 twice now and both times with Ian Gibson. I met Mitch in camp last year and his client at the time was having a very successful hunt. Mitch seemed to have a knack for finding some great animals.

I'm scheduled to go back next year and your photos are making it very difficult to wait.

Congrats again on a great hunt!

500 Grains, I know you have been to Africa quite a few times. I think you need to check out Big 5 the next time you book a hunt, you would really enjoy it.

Sounds like a fantastic hunt and some great trophies. I'll echo others here and say you DID have a very busy 7 days!

Arjun,

You failed to mention the story about the kudu charge. Everyone should get a kick out of that.

That was a busy 7 day hunt! Many pass on the short hunts, but I find, if you have a good PH, in a good area, you can do alot of hunting in 7 days!

...........Congratulations............
