I'm curious to know how many of you here with scopes in QD mounts actually detach your scope to use irons before or while hunting dangerous game. Also, is there a time when you would leave the scope on instead of detaching it for the irons. What variable scope do you all use? Thanks for your input.

Sevens, I think there is a very large misconception about what a QD scope set up is about! They are not usually removed to improve sighting, with iorns, but as back-up!

All my bolt, and singleshot hunting rifles have both scope, in QD mounts, and Irons! My reasoning is the irons are a final back up for the scope! I use two scopes, both in QD mounts, and both zeroed in for the ammo I'm useing in that rifle. This serves two purposes! #1 I always have a back-scope in case one is damaged. #2 the second scope may be a special purpose scope, as well, for things like cats, or bears over bait, where shooting is sometimes done in very low light. This scope may have a lighted reticle,and/or, a very heavy post, and crosshair.

If a scope is damaged a long walk from the bakki, or camp, where the other scope is stored, then the QD scope can be removed to finish the stalk, or even the walk back to the camp, or Bakki, with the irons! Additionally, one scope may be very low power, as in the case of the specialized one for bait hunting, and the other for the open plains shooting! In any event, with a set of good irons, and two QD scopes, a hunt can be salveged if your scope is broken 20,000 miles from home!

I also use double rifles a lot, and some are scoped, for specail purposes, but the irons are my primary, where on the bolt, and singleshots, the scope is primary! I hope this sheds some light on the subject for you!

I detach the scope when I travel simply because it fits in the case better seperately.

The only time I detached the scope while hunting is when we had to follow up on a leopard at night. The last thing I wanted on my rifle at close range in the dark was a scope....

As we began walking toward the bait tree, the PH reminded me to turn my scope down to the lowest power.

I said, "I can't. It's back in the truck."
