Anyone on the board tried the new MRX bullets from Barnes on African plains game? . The MRX is similar to the TSX except that it has a plastic tip and has a tungston core anchored in the back end of it.

The media hype is good on them and the specs seem to indicate that they will do a better job relative to wound channel and penetration than the TSX.

However, having heard it all before, I would like to hear from anyone who has used them, before I buy and load any. They are on the expensive side, about a $1 each and come in packs of 20.

I believe they just began shipping 180gr .308's, so it may be a while before many get into the field.

A tungsten core is gonna be really hard. The rings around the MRX are where all the "give" in the bullet to grip the rifling has got to be.

I would work up loads with this bullet very very carefully.

Tungsten cores have some potential but I wouldn't bet Barnes got it perfect the first time.

Anyone want to bet whether the tungsten core separates from the copper jacket?

Jacket and core separation was one of my concerns. However, based on this picture, it looks like the core is going to have a tough time separating from the jacket. Looks like it is totally enclosed.

I thought this bullet would be a good idea for large calibers on dangerous thin skin game like lion. So I suggested to Barnes, a rapidly opening large caliber bullet for lion. I'm sure they ignored it.

Baised on the shooting of 2 eland,a wildebeast, and 2 cape buff with 480 Woodleighs with my 450 No2, and quite a bit of game with 286 grain Woodleighs in my 9,3x74R, I would use Woodleighs for lion.
