Hi, I just bought a 6.5x55 for the kids, it should be a step up from the .22WM and still not to punishing recoilwise. The idea is that they can hunt an impala or kudu the next time they come along. Have any of you used this cal. on plainsgame? Id appreciate comments and suggestions for bullets etc. I might be using it myself for whitetail.

Curt I havn't used mine in Africa but on Roe Deers, Moose and Wildboar. My recomendation of bullet would be the 156 grains Norma Oryx that has worked really well for me. I have given mine away to my son (8 years) and promised him that he can come with me to Africa in a year or two. I will put the limit to Impala, Blesbuck, Warthog. The bigger ones he will have to wait for.

Thanks for the tip on the Norma bullet. Do you feel that the 6.5x55 is too small a caliber for kudu? Our Scandinavian elks are about the same size and you Swedes have used that cal. a lot on them...

cewe, I have shot everything from Duiker to Eland with a .243. That of course only with head-shots. The 6,5x55 is from my point of view enough gun, provided you get a clean shot. However, I have my doubts that your PH will like it. Speak to him, he might go with it. In the mean time, get your kids to do some training with this legendary caliber and to show daddy, that he isnt the only good shot around. Regards Kamaatu P.S. Where are you going to hunt?

Thanks kamaatu! Ive discussed the issue with my PH and he feels that a 6.5 is good up to impala/kudu. He wasnt very fond of my first idea -a 270 Win. Seems like a lot of people use that as a light caliber weapon but that perfomance in the bush is below par -this is just what Ive heard as I have no personal experience of the cal.
