What's been your experience hunting Africa with the .375 300 gr. Hornady SPBT and 300 gr. Sierra GK. Seems they would be more than adequate for plains game, but iffy on buffalo. Your thoughts.

If your going to Africa, conventional soft point bullets are not the route to take, Safaris are costly, and you travel half way around the world, go with a super premium bullet, its good insurance to not have to deal with a ruined safari...

Both bullets you mention are suitable bullets for all plainsgame I suppose as I have used them on deer and elk only, they are actually too soft but its hard to come up with 300 grs. of failure in .375 caliber so they kill OK most of the time..

The best Sierra that I have used was the 250 gr. .375, surpriseingly it is a very good bullet on elk, with perfect mushrooms, but don't expect a exit hole.

But again don't take this stuff to Africa....

AI,
They will work on any plains game animal... But for DG you have to go with a much stronger bullet... You definately would want a bullet that can penetrate at all angles on the buf...

I assume that the North American elk and moose are as large as any African plains game - correct? Bison are larger than cape buffalo - correct? If the 300 SGK and Hornady SPBT work well on these large North American species, why wouldn't they work on African plains game of equivalent size or smaller?

Nobody has a response to the North American vs. African plains game comment?

Ever heard of a bison that took 14 shots from a 375 to put it down?

Seriously, the question is not whether they work, but whether they are the BEST choice. And the answer is clearly no.

Plains game in Afica is just as prone to dying as the same sized game in North America with a good shot, due to the predator factor they may have a larger adrenaline flow if shot poorly, but a decent boiler room shot kills them all. I'd certainly like to know why someone thinks a well placed shot with any of the mentioned bullets wouldn't kill ANY Africa PG graveyard gravedead and quick at that? Given that any competent shot can stack them up with .308 180 gr Nosler partitions, is anybody seriously going to suggest that 300 gr decent .375s won't do at least as good a job if put in the same spot?

When considering US based operations of guides/outfitters, check and see if they are NRA members. If not, why support someone who doesn't support us? Consider spending your money elsewhere.

I would not hesitate to use either bullet on even the largest lion. A 300 grain out of a .375 H&H would work well. Plainsgame too. Cape buffalo warrant a tougher bullet.

Of course they will work, and kill every animals you might shoot with them.

But, one has to be very careful of his shots.
In Africa, one has to be prepared to take shots which are not ideal. One might have to shoot an animal in the rear end, or quartering away into the stomach.

These bullets would most probably fail. And as ALF mentioned, the animal would die, but not with you close by.

Ever since I have started using mono HP bullets, I would shoot an animal at any angle I am presented with. Knowing full well that it would penetrate far enough to reach the vitals.

I'm picking monolithic hollow point like Barnes X bullets, no core, one piece copper.
