I've been on two, to RSA (Limpopo) with Amanita Safaris and Zim (Binga District) with Russ Broom. I've taken Zebra, Kudu, Gemsbok, Warthog, Impala, Blue Wildebeeste, Blesbuck, bull Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Hippo, and Crocodile.

I'm looking for a good hunt again, in 2009 or 2010. I'm not one who has to collect each different variety of plains game. I don't like Alaska because it's cold and wet. I could care less about wild sheep. New Zealand? I already have an elk and I don't care for funny goat-things. Australia? Their buffs are tame compared to real ones in Africa. So it's Africa. I don't like really hot humid weather or temperatures much above 90. In 2008 I could keep up on the march OK, but I'm 64 now and might be a little deteriorated by 2010.

Some ideas:

1. Hunt for a really big elephant. Where to go? Tanzania? Botswana? What are the chances of success?

2. A PAC hunt. Shoot 5 or 6 elephants. Can't bring back any trophies but that's OK. I think Broom offers these.

3. The cats. But where? And aren't lions very very expensive? Also I like to walk around more than I like to sit in blinds. Leopard in Namibia with dogs?

4. Shoot a few buffalo. Don't need any more but it's fun. Tanzania?

5. Plains game? The problem is I'm running out of room. But just maybe a bigger kudu, a sable, an eland. Not my first choice but might be incidentals on a safari with other objectives.

6. Some really nice scenic experience, maybe combining some of the above in one package. I have heard good things about the Selous but isn't Tanzania very expensive now?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Namibia. Very affordable and stable. Fewer power lines, planes flying over, and cleaner. Go whack some springbok, eland, and duiker. Get some gemsbok hunting in from where they originate and never been on a truck. Spend some time in Windhoek and Etosha.

Zambia!

The lechwe hunts are a blast. There are two species, kafue and black, endemic to Zam. Lots of other plainsgame, plus some of the best DG in Africa.

Zambia!

Ever consider a "green" Rhino hunt? You use a tranquilizer gun, under supervision of a DVM and PH. You must stalk up closer than with a rifle. Measurements and pics are taken before the animal is revived. Synthetic horns can be made as a remembrance of the hunt. Very exciting hunt and will count towards your African Big 5.

I can also arrange Leopard in Mozambique or Botswana with or without dogs.

PM me if any of these interests you. I have a great HO in the Kimberley area of RSA for the Rhino and outstanding areas/PH in Mozambique.

1) Lion in Zambia with Alister Norton
2) Bull Elephant either in the Okavango Delta with Jeff Rann or Johan Calitz or Tanzania with Michel Mantheakis of Miombo Safaris.
3) Cape Buffalo (full 21 day mixed bag would be better if you can afford it) along the border of Tarangire National Park in Tanzania (Luke Samaras or Adam Clements).

I'm thinking about leopard myself. How would you have it mounted? I'm not into full life-size. Does some type shoulder-pedestal do it justice?

Couple I'm considering:
Elephants in Botswana;
Elephants in the Caprivi;
Full bag 21 day in Tanz several options --spend 21 days in Selous hunting cats, buff and ele, (and sable) or split time between the Selous and Rungwa or Masailand. Buff are smaller but I really like the Selous.

If you don't care about the trophies and just want to have fun hunting and cost isn't the main priority go to the selous for 21-28 days. Hunt whatever strikes your fancy and enjoy the ride so to speak. The Selous has the big four, hippo, croc, and a pallethera of plains game. I can't imagine a more wonderful experience then 3-4 weeks in the remoteness of the Selous not caring what you hunt, and just taking the days as they come! That's as close as I think you can come today to the old free wheeling glory days of safari and the early explorers.

My 2 cents.

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

How about Benin or Burkina Faso? Completely different plainsgame species (roan, kob, as well as other kinds of hartebeest, waterbuck, bushbuck, and reedbuck) and you can hunt a another Buffalo species and Lion. Compared to other parts of the continent, Lions in western Africa are very reasonably priced.

Completely different terrain, vegetation, and scenery as well.

Just something to think about.

+1 for hunting the Selous. Most fun I've ever had hunting. Although you didn't mention S. America in your previous hunts, hunting red stag on horseback is lots of fun and very reasonably priced. If you haven't done this before, you should consider it. Let's see, a week in Argentina in march hunting red stag in the roar, then fly from BA to Dar and three weeks in the Selous. I'll have my bags packed if you need any help Big Grin

21 days Selous or Zambia.Would be hard for me to choose as I recall both hunts. The Kansoso Busanga area was excellent for cats,BIG sable,and was infested with sitatunga. Both hunts as close to old african wilderness as you can get.
